IOS 9.2 Rapid Battery Drain Issue

Since upgrading to iOS 9.2, my battery has been running warm and draining fast!

It seems to drain a percentage point every 30 seconds. I went to the Apple Store and they claimed they haven't heard anything about a 9.2 battery issue yet. When I was at the store it was at 99% and went down to 62% in about 10 minutes - no apps running in background. The manager did a wireless diagnostic on my phone, and told me that a couple of apps I had was using battery but nothing substantial. She mentioned that the opersting system Bluetooth app was crashing constantly and could be the culprit. Manager told me they could replace my phone but if I did a restore of my current phone, the problem would continue since she thought it was a software issue rather than a hardware issue. I'm still having the issue and still waiting for Apple to fix this. It is clearly an issue with 9.2 as other people have begun posting the same types of problems. Also the phone is considerably warm to the touch. I have never had a battery issue prior to the upgrade, and have never had an issue using location services either.

After reading several other posts for possible fixes. I have done the following and I am NOT experiencing the rapid battery drain anymore, so problem seems to be resolved. Albeit, it isn't an ideal solution, it seems to have fixed the issue:

1. Perform an encrypted backup in iTunes of the phone. NOTE: If you perform an encrypted backup all of your health data (IE: Apple Watch data, exercises, heart rate, etc.), and passwords are maintained. If you do not check encrypted when performing a backup, then all of that information is lost. You will have to renter passwords everywhere (IE: safari, email, apple id, etc.)

2. Turn off Find My iPhone on your phone in :Settings, iCloud, Find My iPhone

3. Errase all Content and Settings on your phone in: Settings, General, Reset, Erase All Content and Settings

4. Once your phone reboots as a new iPhone, following the steps on your phone by connecting to a wireless network, enter your apple ID and password, then select Restore from Backup from iTunes.

5. Connect your phone to your computer and either start iTunes or it will automatically start when your phone is connected.

6. In iTunes, select restore from backup (your latest one should be selected). If prompted, enter the password you entered when making the encrypted backup.

7. After a while, depending on how much content it has to restore, you should have a duplicate of your original phone back. You will have to enter your Apple ID, reset up Touch ID fingerprints, and Apple pay credit cards. All of your apps will be downloading in the background, which for me, is going to take a while as I have less than 1MBPS out in the country. All of your apps and folders would be maintained in the restore.

As I stated, this is not an ideal solution, but it seems to be working for me. It is going to take a while to restore all of my apps though, as my internet connection and cellular connection are SLOW......

Hope those steps help anyone who is having this frustrating issue.

Good luck!

Ever since I updated to the latest ios 9.2.1, my battery for iPhone 6 Plus has been malfunctioning!!!

i charge all the way to 100% then as soon as I unplug, it goes to 1%, then it dies.

WHen I plug the charger back, it takes few minutes to turn back on, then battery is back to 98%!!!

After 5 min, again, the battery is all the way down to 5%!!! What is the problem Apple not fixing this annoying battery issues quickly enough???

I dont want to reset everything on my phone, so much time consuming when it's the software update issue, they should release the next update ASAP, seriously...!

I've got an iPhone 6S - bought brand new in October - so only about 5 months old. Battery life is super erratic (sometimes at 80% 10+ hours after last charge, sometimes at just 20%, even if its been on standby all day). Not impressed

Recently it seems really bad and very recently (last month or so) it just dies even at 30-40% charge. Plug in to recharge and it comes back to life at 30% - 40%. Seems to be worse if I've been outside (its winter here in UK so typically 5-10C at the moment).

But having read this thread ... I must admit it does seem to be since I went to 9.2, but can't be sure. Going to try moving to 9.2.1 see if it helps.

Wish me luck. I hope I have it because if not ... Apple this is a £500+ phone. You can't ship products with this sort of performance. My iPhone 4 was better than this and it was 4 -5 years old!!!

iphone 5 - Can anyone help me? I tried the process that Paul suggested (thanks Paul - it did help a bit) but I still have trouble with my battery draining drastically. I know others have posted that certain apps are causing a lot of drain on their phone......for me it is the HOME & LOCK screen that is using up the majority of the charge e.g. 87% in a very short period of time. I don't have many apps on my phone and the other apps only use a few % points in any given 24 hour period. However the HOME & LOCK screen chews up huge amounts for some weird reason. I have checked everywhere on the phone to see what can be done to stop the HOME & LOCK screen drain, but I am at a loss. P.S. The battery is relatively new as I replaced it late last year thinking the problem was just a dud battery given the phone is over 2 years old. But obviously it is not the battery. A solution will be appreciated. Thanks.

* Forgot to add that I only have the HOME & LOCK screen set on 1 minute so doesn't explain the huge drain of battery i.e. it's not on 'never' lock.

Went to the Apple Store today with my 6s because of similar battery issues which came on suddenly a couple of weeks ago. Was advised to restore phone and set up from new ie not from a back up. It's made no difference and the battery is still plummeting. Their hardware diagnosis indicated the battery was fine. I'm now running only the Apple apps pre installed and still no joy. Will be going back next week to try again. The phone is virtually unusable as it will only hold charge for about 5 hours as long as I don't use it!

This is just plain theft. I have exactly the same problem: iPhone 6 battery all of a sudden drains and gets hot?! Had the battery replaced twice ⚠ full reset, wipe, restore from iTunes, wiped again. Setting it up as new. And it keeps draining 1% per 3 minutes or even less.

APPLE, are you finally going to DO SOMETHING about this?!

PLease no more nonsense about changing settings, this is an Expensive phone and this is unacceptable.

The battery replacement cost me 80 Euro.

IN addition it now states frequently on all certified apple cables that they are not certified?!!

What is this nonsense. Please update you IOS and resolve this nonsense ASAP.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention the failure to recognise the cable that came with the phone and the heat issue as well!

In some ways it's good to know that the problem is most likely an Apple Software issue. I'm not sure now whether to hold out, hoping for a fix or to call it a day with Apple,, sell the phone and move over to another brand. Despite all the nice features, I ultimately need a phone that is dependable in terms of being able to make and take calls and texts without having to be plugged into the charger every few hours. I've lost 10% in just over an hour without even using the phone.

As a scientist, I'm not into belief either. What would be more helpful is if you could suggest any further investigations/tests. The Apple store have tested the battery and concluded it is ok, In my experience, batteries tend to fail gradually over a period of time and not overnight but I'm open to that as a possibility. It seems however that Apple are not. Their opinion is a software fault but after resetting from new, there is still no change i.e. the only software running on the phone is that supplied by Apple. I'm going back to the store on Sunday but I fear that despite still being in warranty, I'm going to be left with a useless £639 phone.

After waisting money to replace a good battery, the question here is:

1. Replace the lightning/charging port, since this seems to be the issue??

OR

2. Scrap this poor excuse for a sophisticated smartphone with a Samsung, HTC, LG, whatever android of Windows phone (much cheaper)

As much as I appreciate the ease of iCloud, I'm not intending to buy another Apple phone. Would rather have a vendor that doesn't force its customers to use'certified cables' and flat out LIES about hardware defects, sending customers on wild goose chases with charging procedures and vague stories about settings and apps.
