High capacity SD card not working in card slot

I am having issues using a a 200GB MicroSD card in my Macbook Air 13 inch card reader.

SanDisk Ultra 200GB MicroSDCX UHS-I card

Macbook Air 13 inch MID 2012

OSX yosemite 10.10.5

I have had this 200GB card for a week and been using it with my Nifty Minidrive. Previously I had been using a 64GC Micro SD card since Mid 2012 with no issues to date.

Since using this 200GB card a week ago it continuously unmounts itself, becomes corrupt and unreadable, unmountable, and throws all sorts of errors when I try copy data or even make a new folder. I have used disc utility about 20 times to re-mount, verify, repair and get it working. I have had to re-format it 6 times now and tried all different formats and even partitioning it but still having issues. Ive tried to pinpoint the issue by doing the following.

1) I thought the card was faulty at first, however I am not getting any of these issues when I put the 200GB micro SD card into a USB card reader and plug it in via USB.

2) I thought the Nifty Minidrive might be faulty, however the issues don't happen with my 64GB micro SD card.

3) Also the issues still happen when I put the 200GB Micro SD in a Standard SD adapter (actually tried 3 different adapters just to be sure) and put it in the card slot. The 64GB card works fine, but the 200GB card has issues still.

So the only conclusion I can come to is that there are issues with the Macbook Air 13 inch with high capacity cards...

The only question now, is it just my machine or all the built in SD Card readers? I dont know anyone else with one to check though...

Any suggestions, or insight?

I understand this 200GB capacity card is quite new, and I have not been able to find anyone else having issues online. Perhaps I am the first, or its just my machine/card reader that is faulty?

Thanks, Chris.

I have the same issue on a Macbook Air 13 mid-2012. I have the BaseQI adapter. It works fine with 4GB micro-SD. Not so with the 200GB sandisk. I tested it in a 2009 Macbook Pro 13 and it works fine. Using a standard adapter that came with Sandisk, it still does not work on the air with 200GB. All of this debugging tells me it is a combination of hardward contacts and driver error processing. Various copy operations to the 200GB micro-SD on the air, work for a portion then fail with an error of -36. I tried various cleaning methods for the SD slot, to no avail. I also tried to install XQuartz, which fixed the problem for others but no me.

Any help?

Hi, everyone.

Just ordered a Ninja Stealth Drive and am currently looking into buying a 200GB SDXC card from Sandisk. Then I read the posts here... My Mac is semi-old but as long as I have a SCXC-reader I can assume I'm fine, right? I looked up my computer by using the serial number and found the following info:

I clicked the link to read more on my model and found this:

So, people... I am in the clear, right? The ones who have experienced issues here have all confirmed that their computers only have an SD-reader, right?

Thanks in advance for any input or advice!

Same issue here but the problem began after I installed Mac OS Sierra. I have a MacBook Air mid-2014 & am pretty sure its an SDXC reader as I was using the 128gb micro SD installed in a Nifty MiniDrive Air for almost a year before the problem came up.

I was using the beta version of Mac OS Sierra but I only installed the final GM release & never used the one's prior to that. The only problem I foresee is that I did the installation with the Nifty installed.

I even called Apple Support & we went thru a bunch of steps of pressing some keys while restarting or holding down on power up, etc but no solution. Finally, I've been setup to show my Mac for service as it may be some hardware issue.

But the main problem is only this micro SD doesn't work on only my Mac, it works everywhere else. And every other SD card works fine here including another friends Nifty.

Do I do a fresh install of Mac OS Sierra?

Any other advisable solution?

Further info on pros/cons on journal as below link. For me I only use it to sync my Google Drive (80GB+) so when I am on the road I can still access to it and have spotlight for my entire Google drive locally on the MBA. I haven't got issue with corrupted local file and sync'ed up to Google Drive (yet). If journal is really important to you, going back to use the original SD adaptor would still work but I like the flush one. To be honest, important data I would put it on the SSD rather than SD unless I have realtime backup elsewhere.
