In Mail the bar at the bottom of the inbox window won't drag up to allow the content of the selected message to be shown without double clicking to open it in a separate window. Any thoughts about that?

Are you using El Capitan? If so, in Mail, go to Preferences -> Viewing and enable the option to "Use classic layout"

I changed to Classic mode, moved the bar to the bottom of the screen... and then it was stuck. Just like what you experienced.

I did some research and found the following fixed it for me:

1. Quit Mail
2. Move ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail to the desktop.
3. Restart Mail
4. If Mail is working properly, delete the com.apple.mail that you had previously moved to the desktop.

In Mail from the View menu, select "Customize Toolbar". Drag the "Move" button to the toolbar.

Duane, I know this is a year later but I'm having the same problem as Peterwhi. I don't know how to find /Library/Containers/com.apple.mail to move it to the desktop. I've been trying for weeks to fix this on my own. I have put the move button to the toolbar. No problem. Mail is closed right now. Should I or shouldn't I have it in classic mode? Take me through this please.

Actually, with search there's no such thing as Library/Containers/com.apple.mail to be found. I'm OS 10.11.4 in my mini mac that's only a year old.

You just need to make the click and dragging motion at least half way up or across the screen. It's similar to the change with the Dock, where you need to drag an icon almost half way up the screen to get it to disappear.

Deleting files is not necessary.

This was so easy ! Problem solved. It's definitely a different way to deal with this. In the old days, a click and small up arrow and movement did it but now i see I have to do an angled large drag to make it happen.

tzipora, I think that you are looking in the wrong place. You don't want to look in /Library you want to look in ~/Library. The '~' represents your home directory, so you really want to look in /Users/username/Library.

Lanny, I'm glad that works for you. That however does not work for me if I close the preview window. When I was investigating this months ago for a user I learned that if I closed the preview pane there is no way for me to recover it other than removing the existing com.apple.mail.

All I can say, is make sure you click, hold and drag half way across the screen. It works everytime for me on multiple Macs.

Pre- El Capitan it worked just fine. However in El Capitan that no longer works for me.

You are right. You need to drag WAY up the screen to make this happen these days. Not just a little bit. Now I know. No need to go into the "innards" of the Library. Thanks so much.
