Why does Photos file on Mac size increase as Photos Library uploads

I have finally decided to upload my Photos from my iMac to iCloud. I have 12,000+ photos loading now. When I started on the 14th, my Photos file was 59G. When I checked Photos preferences today it says 29 of 59G has uploaded. (Hey, not the fastest connection...). I then looked at my Photos file in my Home folder and it has increased to 89G. Why is this?

As always, thank you to all who will help and have helped in the past.

Did you already have photos stored in iCloud Photo Library. perhaps from another Mac or an iPhone? When you start to sync a new photos Library with iCloud it will download the photos that are already in iCloud to your Mac and upload the new photos from your Mac to iCloud and create a merged library in iCloud that may be larger than what you currently are having on your MAc.

Thanks for your reply. I have had iCloud Photo library off until now on both my Mac and my iPad. It remains off on the iPad. I figured that I will turn it on once all my photos are uploaded in a few more days. Photo stream is on on the iPad but I rarely take pictures with the iPad. An occasional screen shot. Or two. If I look at my iCloud storage for Photos, it shows about the same as has been uploaded when I check Photos on the iMac. I have less than 2G of other data on iCloud.

My Photos App on the iPad is synced with my iMac Photos when I do a sync on iTunes via USB From the iMac, so currently all of my photos are on the iPad. But, as I said, iCloud Photo Library is off.

What are your settings in the Photos > Preferences > iCloud? Is "Optimize Mac Storage" enabled?

we have seen a few cases where the Photos Library increased drastically in size, if it contained referenced images. Are some of your original image files referenced?

Usually the library size should not change, if "Optimize storage" is not enabled, and it should shriek, with "Optimize storage" enabled.

I don't know what you mean by referenced

Photos has two ways of importing photos. Either they are copied into the Photos library and managed by Photos, or they can be left in their original location and Photos will reference the original image files in their folder outside the Photos library. This keeps the Photos library small and you can access the original files using the Finder, but it is not well supported and causing plenty of problems when you need to restore the photos from a backup or to move the photos to a different drive. See: Where are my imported files?

I mentioned the referenced library, because shortly after the first release of Photos we have seen a few reports, that referenced Photos Libraries suddenly increased in size.

You import photos as referenced, if you disable the Photos > Preference > General > Copy items to the Photos Library.
