Buy a macbook in Korea

Good evening everybody:

I am currently working in korea and I want to buy a macbook for christmas. As you know the language here is totally different than in europe and I am afraid to have a Mac OS X in Korean... It is possible to change the language of the system?? And there is some problem if you use your laptop with different nationality software (Mac OSX korean and added french software).
Thank you for your help.

Hi - afferganj -

Good Morning 😉

You can change the language of the system easily by going into System Preferences/International and then selecting from the long list of installed languages. As for software that is native to one language, I'm sure once you change your main system language that it will function along with the software you are running ...although I haven't used any software other than that which is available in English.

To add to the information that Troy just told you, you can change the system language anytime to any one that you need---Mac OS is fully Unicode compliant and localized to most languages.

When you start your computer for the first time, it will ask which language you prefer, simply select English and all system menus, help files, and Apple software will be in English. You could also, for example, buy Aperture (the photo management software) in Korea, and when you install it, you just pick English as the install language. All Apple software is also Unicode, so it's just a matter of choosing your language when you install it (or it will install in the language of the system, but can be switched anytime). For Apple software, the only thing that is different in each country (as far as I know) is the box---the software is all the same---the install disc comes in all languages.

Also, whether you purchase from Apple online or in an Apple retail store, they will install an English keyboard, or in the case of the Apple store, they will swap out the Korean keyboard for an English one (at least they do in Japan, while you wait).

I'm in Korea as we speak. I bought my MB about 2 months ago. When you first start it up - it asks you about the language you want to use - so you won't have to worry about Korean. The Keybord has korean letters on it as well - but that shouldnt bother you - it dont bother me =)

You can use this MB anywhere in the world - they're easy to change languages - just reinstall OSX and choose your language - you can get the English/French version as well - I saw it when I reinstalled OSX.

Basically it is no different than buying one in Canada - except for the Korean letters on the keybord

Cheers

just reinstall OSX and choose your language

You don't even need to do that.. Just go to SysPreferences>International>Language and change the order for preferred languages.

Any software that has multiple language translations will automatically pick the language closest to the top of the list to use for itself. So if you are running the OS in Korean and an application includes both Korean and English translations, it will automatically run in Korean. If it doesn't have the Korean, then it will drop down to English or whichever language is next in the Preference pane that it does have.

The OS can run in any of those languages. I've got mine running English in my account, and Japanese in my wife's, plus sometimes jump into German or Korean on a third account to help people troubleshoot.
