I am using a Japanese kana keyboard on my iPad (besides my regular keyboard).
On my old iPad everything was OK.
On my new iPad, the column order of the keyboard is reversed. I find this strange as both iPads run on the same iOS version (9.2). Also pictures I find on internet show that the order on my old iPad is correct.
Did I miss something?

I did exactly that.
Maybe my OP wasn't clear enough. I meant I can select the Japanese kana keyboard on my iPad, and it also appears. However the keys on the keyboard are in a different order than on my previous iPad: the rows are in reverse order. For example the character あ was on the far left and is now on the far right.

You have misunderstood the procedure. This is not about activating the Kana keyboard. It is about going to the very bottom of the page where there is a special section called "Kana" where you can turn a setting "あ on the left" on or off.

SOrry, the kana setting is one page earlier than i said before, on Keyboards instead of Keyboard.
Yes, that's why I thought I had already done that.
But after your second post I found it immediately 🙂
By the way, I never saw this option before, maybe it it was introduced with iOS 8 or 9?
