External display not working after El Capitan update

Hi All,

Hopefully someone can help me out with this. I've got a 2011 MBP (i7, 4GB ram, 330M) and since I updated to El Capitan (now on 10.11.2) my external display will no longer work. I'm using an HDMI to MiniPort cable and which was working before the update. I'm trying to connect to a 720p TV, and have also tried to connect it to my 28" 1080p ASUS monitor which I normally use for my Windows desktop. Neither worked. My MacBook's display flickers for a moment when I connect it, and then nothing. I was also not able to connect it to my projector via VGA to USB adapter until I found the latest update on the adapter's website, so at least that display has been solved. I have tried the 'detect display' button under system preferences, no luck.

I have had the same issues. I have installed El Capitan in MacBook Air early 2015. My external monitor is Dell P2314H. After the installation, MacBook Air no longer detected the monitor, and the monitor didn't register any video input from the computer.

I chatted with Apple Support but they didn't give me satisfactory answers.

Then I stumbled upon this reply on another discussion thread with the similar issue:

Re: El Capitan does not detect my external display

And the solution that works for me turns out to be as simple as changing the cable. So I have stopped using Apple's official mini displayport to HDMI/DisplayPort/DVI connector. Instead now I use a cable (mini displayport from MacBook Air to displayport in my Dell) that I purchased locally (I live in Jakarta, Indonesia). It works like magic.

I hope this helps you.

Thanks Mohamad, that is helpful. I'm very tight on cash right now, so I guess that's at least temporarily not an option for me. Apple really needs to address this problem, especially considering in your case you were using their official adapter. I'm using something I ordered off of Amazon awhile ago, I have no idea what the brand is. Do you remember what brand you're using? I'm in the U.S., so I may not even be able to find it, but it's worth a shot.

What I'm using is unbranded, but it works.

Here's the list of all the brands that have been "approved" by the authority board of DisplayPort (yes, I didn't know it existed too).

Accell miniDP-DP cables are available in Amazon.com and it costs around $20: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A7R9I22?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_deta ilpages00

I hope this helps. Good luck.
