Can I uninstall and reinstall iTunes

When I open iTuned, I see a pinwheel spinning. I have to force quit iTunes to close it. How can I uninstall and reinstall iTunes in El Capitan?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2)

iTunes is now part of the operating system and cannot be manually uninstalled. To reinstall iTunes, OS X will need to be reinstalled through recovery mode. Reinstalling OS X may not be the appropriate troubleshooting step to take. It seems like iTunes is becoming unresponsive at launch, try testing the issue in a new user account.

Re-installing iTunes might not be the solution. In fact, replacing the app itself will not resolve any issues with a broken iTunes library, broken iTunes configuration files or a broken user account.

Before you follow any of the following procedures make sure you have a recent backup.

1. The easiest issue to check is a broken library. Press and hold the OPTION key and start iTunes. A dialog will offer you to create a new library.

2. The next step would be to check for broken configuration files. Delete the following folders and files:

~/Library/iTunes

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist

3. If 1. and 2. didn't help you might want to try and create a new user account in System Preferences -> Users & Groups. Log in with that new user and try to start iTunes.

4. If none of the above worked you could try to replace iTunes with a fresh copy.

- open Terminal and type "sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app"

- type the password of your current user account, assuming it has administrative privileges

- open Safari and go to "www.apple.com/downloads", find "iTunes" and click on the "Download" button

- install iTunes and reboot your Mac
