a network can detect whats on it, in many cases it's how your computer gets an IP address.
What are you trying to hide and what kind of network is it? Mac's and PC's? Mac only? Home network? Public Library or Coffee Shop?
turning off most if not all of your sharing will limit the amount of network "announcing" your computer will do and you can also turn off Bluetooth if you don't need it. Your sharing options are in >System Preferences...>Sharing
Maybe play with your Security Firewall preferences
Use whatever computer you think is detecting you to see if your changes have any effect.
You might also Google search for "Mavericks kill Bonjour" and you might find instructions on turning off Bonjour that does a lot of the announcements, but not all. If you have ports open there are still scanner software to detect and identify the computer with those ports open.
You cannot be truly invisible if you are on the network, as you have to be talking to use the network. If you are not using the network, then you can cut the connection and be invisible.
I am sure I was able to do it previously. Hide it from other Apple computers on the network.
Cheers
Disconnect it from the network. Otherwise it cannot be invisible.
You could get another router and put that between your Mac and the LAN so all anyone would see is the router. The router must be in full router mode so that it blocks local broadcast protocols, such as Bonjour.
