No cursor on Login screen at boot or restart

Hello, my missing cursor issue is a bit different than others, I don't have VMWare installed, nor do I use a wireless mouse/keyboard. And it doesn't happen randomly while using the laptop. Also reawakening is okay because I only need to enter a password, not choose between accounts.

My 13" Mid 2012 MBP non retina was having no issues logging on with 10.11.1. But when I upgraded to 10.11.2 I started to have a problem. After my lap top boots and I come to the login/password page, there is no mouse cursor for me to click on the user account icon to get the password box. This only happens at start-up or restart. It used to only happen if I had my MBP hibernating for quite a few hours and rebooted (I run Onyx to clean and a restart is recommended), but now it occurs if I've had it shut off overnight.

If I shut the lid and put it to sleep for 5-10 seconds and then reopen the lid .I get a black screen for around 5 seconds then the normal login screen is back with a cursor and I can login normally I recall at least one time needing to close the lid more than once.

I did "fix" it for a few days by disabling bluetooth in sys. prefs. For some reason, upgrading to 10.11.2 re-enabled bluetooth. But a few days ago, the missing cursor issue reappeared.

Today I tried something different. I used the trackpad to swipe the "invisible" cursor from the upper left corner where it usually sits at start up, and swiped over to where my account icon sits. I guessed correctly (was lucky) and was able to click on the icon sans cursor haha. So logging in isn't buggy, just no cursor.

If this sounds familiar to anyone or someone has any advice, I'd really appreciate it. I'd rather not do a clean install. Maybe safely deleting a plist or launch daemon will work? Thanks!

thanks. I've have done pram and smc reset. the shake stuff had been turned on, so i did no changes to this option. i'm not sure how a bigger cursor (thats what the slider does when sliding to the right) should help me fix this problem ;-) its not the problem that i can't find the cursor - it's realy not there :-P

i've also contacted apple but they also suggestes pram and smc reset and to give it a try. if the problem is still there i should contact them again.

let's see if the problem is solved.

cheers,

mike

1. I would like to advise not to use Onyx to "clean", nor do other "cleaning". It seems to me that you have "cleaned" one or more caches that you you should not clean.

Mac OSX has cleaning built-in: daily, weekly, monthly cleaning....

Onyx is very well programmed, but all functions are already in OSX, either visible to be used or invisible.

2. do you use any other "tools" "helper" "booster" "cleaner" "optimiser" "keeper" "antivirus" or that sort of tools/apps?

While in general I offer the advice not use any "cleaners", I would like to point out that OnyX is a solid and reputable program, that clearly states what it does and provides a clean GUI to adjust some settings that would otherwise require trips to the Terminal. It has been offered for free to the community and versions are still around for old OS versions (I think all the way to Jaguar).

I do not use as often now, but it has helped me in quite a few instances. I used in my Blue and White Powermac G3 (Ah! Nostalgia...)

This bug, like most that happen only sporadically and in some machines but not others, may be difficult to pinpoint.

It is certainly vexing for the affected users. I can't offer a solution, but I would like to point out that one can still log in, without guessing. Use the left and right arrow keys and the respective accounts will be highlighted. Pressing enter gives you the password box.

thanks for the hints 🙂

my fear was that the trackpad itself has a problem. but i think its more likely a software bug. mcshark offered to send it in for repair, but i think it won't help. also i need the macbook for my business. so it would prefer not sending it around for the purpose of sending it around 😉 hopefully they fix the problem in the software - it they care.

cheers
