I have a few questions about the Preview Folder in Finder.
What is the overall purpose of files being copied to this folder?
Can files in this folder be deleted?
Will the auto delete after a certain amount of time?
What type of files show up in this folder?

Yeah, I have over 100 files building up in there. When I open a file in a different folder it creates a copy there in the preview folder.
I store all my files in the iCloud directory in sub folders. So when I open one of those files or edit one of those files it creates a copy in the preview folder that is not removed.
Based on limited testing, those folders are there to make files available to iOS devices from iCloud. iOS apps can only access files from specific locations, so if you create a files in your own folder structure it seems to copy the file into the correct folder structure for use with iCloud Drive.
It makes a hard link to the file which doesn't duplicate the file. It just adds another reference to the file.
If you create subfolders in the Application folders, it won't link the file. However, that organization structure may not be functional.

Perhaps a screen shot of exactly what you are talking about might help.
If you are talking about the preview pane, it is there so you don't need to actually open a file to see its contents.
That is the local iCloud Drive folder for Preview files (jpg, txt, etc).
Thanks but what's the point of the folder? I open a file from it's location and it puts a copy in this folder?
The point of the folder is to show you locally what is stored on iCloud Drive.
I have no idea why you get a copy of every file you open. Mine doesn't do that.
Does it remain after you close the file?
