MacBook pro running slow.

This wonderful machine has begun to run slow. : ( We are pretty sure its us not the machine, but Us, that has done wrong somewhere along the line.

We've seen you kind apple wizards solve this sort of thing quite well for folks in a similar situation. We would be very grateful if you could help us no longer stare into the spinning wheel of bummer.

A well meaning friend downloaded cleanmymac for us, and then my partner recently tried to get rid of it cause we heard such bad things about the program, but she didn't use the uninstaller; she just searched it out and dragged it to the trash. I cant find any remaining pieces of it with spotlight or other searches, but it seems it is still lingering... how to find and eradicate?!

Dec 30, 2015 7:45 AM in response to Tggerbot

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

OK, I reinstalled and uninstalled cleanmymac3, I ran the disc utility, verified and repaired the discs. No issues were indicated when verifying. Low hanging fruit. Check!

Now if the spinning beach ball shows itself in an ugly way I will note the time, check the log extract, and paste the relevant info.

Thanks for your help y'all!

Also, if there are any other low hanging fruit I can pick in the meantime. Let me know : )

Not so fast. Please run EtreCheck again and post the results to make sure it is gone. That will also give us a before and after comparison of your system speed.

I ran the disc utility, verified and repaired the discs. No issues were indicated when verifying. Low hanging fruit. Check!

That doesn't mean too much. Disk Utility only checks filesystems, not physical failures. The only guaranteed was to determine that the hard drive is failing is to replace it and observe that the problem is gone. Otherwise, you just have to diagnose them with the "duck test". If it looks like a failed drive and sound like a failed drive, then it probably is. Your first EtreCheck report had a runtime of over 7 minutes, which is pretty bad for Mavericks, which otherwise is the last Mac operating system that ran with decent speed on a machine like yours.

Crap, it looks like that cleanmymac thing is still there.. and 102% of the cpu going to mdworker2 doesn't seem ideal.

Dec 30, 2015 5:43 PM in response to Tggerbot

Hello again Tggerbot,

The only bit left is in your Login Items. Just go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > (your account) > Login Items, select CleanMyMac, and click the "-" button to remove it. There may still be pieces of it left on your system, but they aren't being loaded anymore. Just restart once more and you should be good.

They mdworker usage may be normal depending on what CleanMyMac was doing. After you restart again, let it run for a couple of days. Then run EtreCheck again and if there is no more heavy mdworker usage, you should be good. EtreCheck itself is running faster at 2:42 instead of 7:02. If there are things still running slow, we can focus on those specific tasks.

Dec 30, 2015 5:50 PM in response to etresoft

OK. Cleanmymac should be gone for good. I restarted and will run etrecheck in a few days and post the results. If I get any swirly beach balls I will note the time and hopefully we can figure out whats causin the prob. Thanks for all your help everyone!

PS. If there are any applications, or programs or anything you see in the etrecheck that could be making this machine slower than it could be, feel free to let me know. Id love to get it running as good as possible.
