iCloud Backup failed, cannot be enabled...

Hello,

I have two iOS devices:

  • Device 1: iPhone 5 (MD297)
  • Device 2: iPad 4 (MD524)
  • Both devices iOS 9.2 (13C75)

Device 1 is correctly backing up on iCloud and iTunes (Windows); the backup size as shown in Settings/iCloud is about 400MB.

The photo library (shared) is also consuming about 650MB of my iCloud space which is limited to 5GB (standard free capacity).

Device 2 is correctly backing up on iTunes (Windows) but do not backup on iCloud anymore since my last backup on October 18, 2015 (I do not recall which 9.x version of iOS it was at that time - I am usually upgrading soon after availability of the new versions). According Settings/iCloud... the next backup should be around 2.9GB which, together with the already consumed 1.05GB is not exceeding the 5GB limit.

I searched for solutions across forums, communities and tried unsuccessfully many hints, among others:

  • Deleting older backups (was not straightforward but eventually worked)
  • Connected to different WiFi, with and without power cable
  • Disconnecting from iCloud and reconnecting (Could only re-enable iCloud backups from iTunes, not from iOS)
  • Hints from Fromsouth in this article Backup problems after ios 9

"Problem C" - one device is baking up the other not

    • Cannot deactivate backup of individual Apps - says "Cannot deactivate at this time"
(waited for the wheel stop rotating)

Does anyone have any further suggestion?

thanks a lot, regards,

Pierre

If you ipad setup as new is not backing up you really need to speak to Apple.

If my guess is correct here is the phone number.

Done.

Helpdesk lady basically ran me into the same kind of tests/trials but with no successful resolution.

She finally called 2nd level team and trey came up telling there are similar problems already reported and these are related to specific machines, not all.

The problem is assumed to be fix with next update due to be released very soon.

I have just to wait and see - re-contact support if problem is not solved after next update.

I'll let you know what's going on this post when next update is available -

Did second level person give you contact info or asked to try to backup on different icloud account?

No. However, from the questions asked, I have an idea of what could be the problem.

Actually, there is something misleading in the display of the storage page...

System says, I have a 2GB backup and, at the same time, indicates it was never backed up.

I have 400MB FOR IPhone backup, let's say 650MB for iCloud Photo library... If there is a mismatch between server and client on the status of the last performed iCloud (the lady was seeing one... I have misleading info on the iPad... But no way to delete it... A second time), it could be the process run into an unexpected storage constraint I.e. Exceeding the free 5GB limit (and, because unexpected, not resulting in a meaningful message).

I believe this could be a sound reason for he problem...

let's wait ofr the update.

I think you are referring to part A of my original "tip", but deleting current backup deletes the old by that releasing needed 2.9 Gb of storage. I regret that they decided not to look at your situation personally and suggested to just wait for updates, to my opinion

if device as brand new does not backup there has to be a serious problem with account. But all in all we want to believe that Apple support knows what they are doing better then us. If you ever in the mood you can try to sign out of your apple id in icloud, create new account and try to backup. It will take care of perceived storage problem at the very least and show us that is or is not the case. And if you can backup on new account - I would get back with them to see if they can do anything to fix yours.

What I meant is that if the iPad thinks a backup was never done there is no reason iPad let me ask for deletion of a backup.

On the other end, if the server thinks the opposite, 2.9Gb are used out of the 2.1Gb for a backup server has but iPad do not recognize with no way to delete it.

And I think Apple support was right in saying something in future version would solve the issue.

I register myself for insider program and install the 9.3 version... After a while, the backup was initiated without any more intervention.

Here is Now the current situation (note after my iPad backed up, I also change to a new iPhone form my company and policies changed a little bit leading to a quite small backup)

Thanks for your help - my problem is over now -
