Imported a voice mp3 file and it appears golden, then tap opt ctl G and it turns dark blue not the typically lighter blue - and we are not able to edit (cut out clips, etc.) from the track.
How can I get this track into a state that we can edit it?

Which version of GarageBand are you using?
opt ctl G does no longer work in GarageBand 10 to turn an audio file into a n editable audio region. It only works in GarageBand '11.
We're using 10.1 and the opt cut G works to turn an orange or golden (not sure what the actual color is) into an editable light blue / purple track.
This is a screen shot of a track that shows the darken background and it is not editable... Not sure what we did or what work flow created this... nor how to convert to something that we can edit...
any ideas?

I've never noticed, that this feature is back in GarageBand 10.1. That is good news, thank you!
But I canot reproduce your problem with the audio file that is not editable.
As soon as I enable "flex" in the settings for the track, the regions can be edited for the mp3 audio file track:
HI Leonie, we tried the Enable Flex and no difference. We did notice that turning off the volume control points changed the color of the tracks away from dark blue - so one mystery solved.
We than happened to try a cut that did not include the first bit of the track, and it worked. When we tried to clip off the first part of the track by highlighting and tapping delete that did not work. Not sure what that's about... so, we simple isolated the early bit and double clicked it to select, then deleted.
We're back into editing again. Thanks for the help and every day I'm learning more about this program...
