iPhone - How do I pinpoint exactly what app is using Location-Based Alerts?

I can see that Compass Calibration and Location-Based alerts are using my location fairly regularly, with the status arrow showing purple nearly every time.

Compass Calibration does turn off after a while but the Location-Based Alerts stays purple pretty much all the time.

Can anyone explain how to identify the app or apps causing this? I know I can turn it off generally but I do like to leave it on for certain things.

Thanks,

Adrian.

I cannot believe no-one else is having this?

What are location based alerts and which app (3rd party or Apple) is using location services under the tab location based alerts?

Anyone?

Aa soon as you enable it, location services comes on. Does not tell you what is using it.

I think your confusing Location Services and Location Based Alerts. Any app you've given permission to can be using location services. That's the indicator you're seeing in the status bar. There's no specific indicator for location based alerts, to the best of my knowledge.

Agreed, and yes I do have the odd reminders with locations on them.

However, surely the location services must poll for location based alerts at some intervals and not be constantly on?

If I turn location based alerts on, in my case, location services appears to stay on and never turn off as indicated by the Star Trek icon always being there.

I have turned location based alerts off for the last 2 weeks and location services behaves as expected, coming on now and again and going off most of the time.

Before that it was on constantly, which like it or not, must drain battery.

I would think that location services must by design poll on some sort of schedule if not constantly on. It is one of the go-to things to turn off when having battery life issues. Wouldn't it's effectiveness be impacted though by only polling every XXX seconds? Then we would see threads here about how to adjust then timing of the polling.

If you Google iOS location services polling interval, you get discussions that sound like it's an app by app setting. The developers control the polling interval, not iOS, which merely provides the service on request.

If you haven't already, you can restrict each app's use of location services to "only when using this app"

it's on most, though not all of the time, on my phone. Of course, I use a lot of apps that use location services. I don't actually pay much attention to it. It seems to be one of those things that bothers some people, though.

Looks like I am beginning to understand this, appreciate you all throwing your tuppences in!

I think the best comment is "The developers control the polling interval" by LACAllen.

So in other words, at the moment, the Location Based Alerts section in IOS is not granular enough to show us what app is polling for location.

May file something with Apple because it does bother me that as soon as I turn it on, it instantly gets my location, stays on and I have no idea what it is asking for that information.

I moved over from Android due to instability and privacy and I don't want to have that battle with Apple as well as Google!

Thanks Guys!
