how do I unhighlight text links after visiting a website?

When I do a search on google or visit Craigslist or where ever, the text link that I had visited remains highlighted. It doesn't matter if it's a day, week, month etc. it stays highlighted.

I use both Firefox and or Safari web browsers, same problem, and use OS X 10.11.1

Advice on how to rectify, would be appreciated.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Your response is appreciated, however, clearing the history is like doing this manually. I'll look into the cookies idea.

How this problem arose was, I had to do a clean reboot yesterday, so all the settings were whitewashed, and this was one of them, that I'm trying to reset, and was done a long time ago. The only part I can recall is in the address window, it started with about: but I don't recall the rest. It did work, and never had to make adjustments from time to time.

I searched the internet, which is where I got the info eons ago, but coming up with blanks.
