Please help-cannot transfer MPEG-4 audio from laptop to ipad

HI.

I'm afraid I am a Stoneage man trying to use new technology.... The problem is as follows:

My grandson borrowed and lost my old iPod. It had about 1300 tracks on most of which I had copied from CDs and 30 tracks or so I had purchased through ITunes.

I have just bought a new iPad and have been able to access my iTunes account but it only contains the 30 or so purchased tracks.

I have found on my old windows laptop a file under MY MUSIC that contains the missing 1300 tracks. They will all play from that location on the old laptop.

They are all shown as MPEG-4 Audio files.

I have managed to connect my iPad via usb lead to laptop and the iPad shows on the laptop screen. I have tried to select all tracks and drag them to the iPad. This shows 1300 files being dragged and dropped but after a few seconds I get a message saying .. Cannot copy item.Device either stopped responding or has been disconnected.

I Have checked and checked but nothing is disconnected and I can't see anything that's not responding.

Could it be that the files on my laptop are not the right type to be transferred...or is there something else that I am doing wrong?

Any help would be appreciated....if I had any hair left, I would be pulling it out!!!

Thanks, Richard

Items cannot be copied to an i-device y simple dragging, they have to be synced through iTunes.

Sync your iPhone, iPad, and iPod with iTunes using USB - Apple Support - https://support.apple.com/HT201253 - detailed example: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4090536?answerId=18860187022#18860187022

Sync your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch with iTunes using Wi-Fi - Apple Support - https://support.apple.com/HT203075

Realize though that a device can only be synced to one library at a time. You are very limited in mentioning your setup and if this PC is your main computer or secondary. If you use another computer you will need a better solution I can provide but I don't want to type it all in unless you need it. 🙂

TThanks for replying Limnos.

I have read the links you sent me. I did have two iPods, the earlier one is now used by my wife. The second one is the lost one. My wife has managed to change the account information on that earlier one and now uses it for her own music.I was worried that if I tried to sync my iPad that it would either erase or perhaps steal her music

We have now managed to change that first iPod into my wife's name.

So the situation is now that's all my 1300 tracks are on an external hard driveas MPEG 4 files which can be connected to my laptop by a USB cable. So the question is can I plug my iPad into my laptop and ask it to sync to my iPad from that external hard drive.

I am so confused by the situation that I wouldn't be surprised if you weren't able to help me either as my explanations are probably as clear as mud. Butthanks very much for trying anyway
