12" G4 LCD internals compatible with G3?

12" G4 LCD internals compatible with G3?

Anyone know if the LCD panel itself from a 12"G3 would work in the lid to a 12" G4? I know the inverters are different, but what about the actual LCD?

G5 Dual 2Ghz, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi,

According to the ifixit.com site ( http://www.ifixit.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=2051&cat=&page=1 ), the panel is the same. The cables are different, so you will need to very carefully take the LVDS data cable out of the back of the LCD.

The parts listed online at several repair companies (who sell parts and/or
service Apple portable computers) show the LCD to be similar. The lack
of details in transmorphogenic applications appear intended to obstruct
the causal user from frankensteinian builds. I've read in the MFI forums
some user or another had done it; the posts go away after some time,
so finding any references there can be impossible after awhile.

Some new replacement LCD 12" for iBook for sale at repair companies
do show "for G4/G3 white" but do list a different part number for 12" PBG4.

My sons ibook g4 display was steped on and cracked. I replaced it with the panel from my old g3 800 that had a bad logic board. No problems, all the cables matched,1 hr fix. I have 2 more g3's and 1 g4 with bad logic boards so I have a few more spares....

Update... Replacing the internals on the lid is a much easier fix than switching the entire lid. Much easier. Though many people say the 12" displays are interchangeable, the cables are different on some models. Also, if you are removing the lid, be aware that you need to strip just about everything off of the computer to get at all of the connections, and there are some incredibly fragile connections on the motherboard. Fortunately, I have a friend who is very handy with a soldering iron. Looks like the connection that broke off was one of the issues mentioned on several forums as a problem with those motherboards. Anyway, problem solved.
