Solution for Cache.db problem in Safari?

Is there a permanent fix for the endless issues with Safari and its Cache.db problem?

I'm tired of constantly having to quit Safari to delete the Cache.db file. If I don't the machine will hang (freeze). And prior to reaching that point websites won't load or will take forever to load. This means stopping my work and having to dig through my history in order to reopen pages that I was viewing prior to having to quit Safari, hunt for the Cache.db, deleting it, restarting Safari and repopulating the pages I wanted open. Quite a hassle and one that's irritating the **** out of me.

As I search for a potential solution I see that this problem goes back to 2011 or possibly even earlier. It is now 2016 and clearly Apple has no desire to fix this flaw in one of their flagship products. I mean, it's been half a decade!!

I prefer to stick to Safari as my main browser, despite the daily torture, I still find it has advantages over the competition. But I dread I'm ready to cut my losses if a fix isn't found. Clearly waiting for Apple to address this isn't an option. Does anyone know of a fix, other than completely deleting Safari from my Mac? Running OSX 10.10.5

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Thanks macjack, please find the report below. As you can see it has a couple of red markers, hope you can make more sense of it than I can. I should also point out that the problem with freezes and a very laggy Safari only started happening after I upgraded from OSX10.6 last year. Was happy with the system and waited as long as I could prior to leaving what to me was the most stable system since OS9. Thought that Yosemite would have fixed that but it made no difference.

You have a lot of cruft in there but I’d suspect your main problem with the cache to be either littlesnitch or google keystone. I’d remove all Safari Plug-ins for now and see how that affects your cache.

In addition I’d also strongly recommend you uninstall Littlesnitch which is at best a resource hog and also uninstall the following items. You’ll probably find your Mac running much fster and better without them.

LittleSnitch

Appreciate not only the insightful tips but also for providing the links to how to address these. Deleted the ones you suggested (or in the case of Codemeter disabled it, since a full deletion is a bit of pain). Also deleted a few other files I suspected could have been stealing resources and other plug-ins. Will let the machine run for a couple of days and see if Safari becomes stable, although I'm sure that by deleting those wasteful apps that things ought to improve overall. Will report back with results. For now here's a report just taken, after a restart. Again, thanks for the help with this.

Yep, never did plan to keep Cleanmymac, I don't trust these apps. Not sure if it's as nasty as MacKeeper but I'm not about to fork out US$40 for that. It doesn't do anything I can't do for free. Which I must confess, am way overdue for a clean up. As it stands Cleanmymac states (if it can be trusted) that I have 8.4gig worth of useless, redundant files taking up space. Not sure I can trust it to safely delete all of that but regardless, am ridding of these files and Cleanmymac soon enough. Thanks for posting the link for EasyFind, wasn't aware of this app.

Do not use CleanMyMac to do anything at all other than remove itself, which will require the additional steps outlined below.

Excerpted from Effective defenses against malware and other threats:

Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.

  • Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
  • They generally operate on the flawed premise that a Mac accumulates "junk" that needs to be routinely "cleaned out" for optimum performance.
  • Trial versions of those programs are successful because they provide the instant gratification of greater free disk space.
  • That increased space is the result of irreversible destruction of files, programs, or operating system components normally protected from inadvertent alteration or deletion. The eventual result will be unreliable operation, poor performance and random crashes that may not become evident for months or even years after their use, when updates to programs or OS X are eventually released.
  • Memory "cleaners" that circumvent OS X's memory management algorithms work by purging inactive memory contents to mass storage, which can only result in degraded performance and accelerated hardware failure.

To remove CleanMyMac 3 itself, use its Uninstaller module, followed by these additional steps:

Remove the file ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

  • To navigate to that file, copy and paste the following line into the Finder's Go menu > Go To Folder...

~/Library/LaunchAgents/

  • Locate the following file and drag it to the Trash:
  • com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

    • Then, open  (Apple menu) > System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items.
    • Select the item CleanMyMac3 Menu
    • Click the [—] (minus) button.
    • Restart your Mac.

Beware that reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system. To recover from the effects of having used it to modify OS X, the additional software you require and the essential files you need, follow the applicable recovery procedure below:

    • If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
    • If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.
      • The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new User Account whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
      • To erase and install OS X read How to reinstall OS X on your Mac.
        • Follow the instructions in that document under Erase your drive and install OS X.
        • Then, follow the procedure in Move your content to a new Mac.
        • When asked how you want to transfer your information, select Transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk.
        • Under Select the Information to Transfer, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
      • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
      • "Non-essential software" is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.
