Mac pro late 2013 - How much ram support in slave-setup via network

My station:

Mac pro late 2013, 6 cores.

I am setting up my mac with a slave via VePro 5 and gigabit network. Is it a limit to how much ram the mac supports in the slave? The mac itself is limited to 64gb, but I wanted to load the slave with 128.

Mac Pro (Late 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

It does not sound like you have a good grasp on what should be running on the Master or the Slave computer, what processing power you need for either, or what computers you should be using. I strongly recommend you consult the software maker for their recommendations before spending the very large amounts of money needed to pull this off.

The Mac Pro is an expensive dual-graphics beast, that can also run a large RAM memory, but its claim to fame (and the reason for its extreme cost) is that in manages to tightly integrate a large Xeon Processor with two high-end graphics cards (one reserved for Graphics-computing only) and error-correcting RAM, and still manages to power and cool the while business adequately.

You may be better served by a PC with a mundane desktop-class processor, pathetic graphics, and a very large RAM.

Oh by the contrary Grant Bennet-Alder. From 20 years of experience in my business I know very much about what I need, I just didn´t need to pour it all out on you guys just to know how much ram a mac pro (that I have already owned for two years btw) could take from a slave. Unless you have an extensive knowledge and experience on working with large sample libraries, that require more streaming than a single computer (even mac pro) can take, you add nothing of worth. Sorry of the harsh words, but don´t assume all people asking in forums are noobs.

By VePro 5 I am presuming you are referring to Vienna Ensemble Pro 5.

This is merely an application running on a Mac or Windows PC, it does not itself dictate the maximum amount of RAM a computer can have. As mentioned by Illaass it is actually possible to (unofficially) fit 128GB of RAM to the 2013 Mac Pro (and 2010 and 2012 models as well). From the Mac perspective there is no such thing as a slave or master it is just a Mac. The slave/master concept here is purely how VePro 5 is running and as mentioned it does not control the amount of RAM the computer can use.

I would say even 64GB looks to be way more than you need. Here are the official VePro 5 System Requirements which as you can only need 2GB and recommend 4GB. Even adding additional memory for other things like the operating system and other applications it would seem unlikely you need 64GB let alone 128GB.

System Requirements

  • PC Windows 7/8/10 (latest Update, 32/64-bit), Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon 64 X2
  • Mac OS X 10.8 (latest update), Intel Core 2 Duo
  • 2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended)
  • Working Gigabit connection between master and slave computer(s). Also works on a one-computer setup.
  • ViennaKey (Vienna Symphonic Library USB protection device) or other USB eLicenser (e.g., from Steinberg or Arturia)
  • eLicenser Control Center software (get the latest version from www.eLicenser.net)

Other configurations may work but are not actively supported.

Recommended

  • PC Windows 7/8/10 (latest Update, 64-bit), Intel i5/i7/Xeon
  • Mac OS X 10.9 (or higher), i5/i7/Xeon
  • Fast separate hard drive (7200 rpm or faster)
  • AU/VST/VST3/AAX Native/RTAS/MAS compatible host (also works stand-alone)
  • MAS version requires Digital Performer 8 or higher
  • RTAS version requires Pro Tools 7.3 or higher
  • AAX version requires Pro Tools 10.3.5 or higher
  • 88 key master keyboard

Note: Most other Mac models even current ones are limited to 16GB maximum RAM.
