My brand new ipod won't sync with itunes

My brand new ipod won't sync with my itunes and it keeps saying the following - The iPod “iPod” cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. I have the latest version of itunes on my computer so this makes no sense to me. Anyone have a solution? Thanks.

iPod nano, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Here is the tech specs for the current 7th gen nano

Under System Requirements, it says "Mac: USB 2 or 3 port, OS X v10.7.5 or later, and iTunes 12.2 or later."

If your Mac runs Snow Leopard (10.6.8), the latest version of iTunes for that release of OS X is not supported with the iPod. You'll need to update OS X to a later release. To determines your options, select About This Mac from the Apple menu. For Snow Leopard, there's a button for More Info. What does it say for Model Identifier?
