"Check signal cable" with MacBook Air and Samsung 2494lw monitor

i have a Samsung Syncmaster 2494lw monitor that I am trying to connect to my 2014 MacBook Air running el capitan. I am using a thunderbolt to HDMI adapter from Belkin to connect to the monitor and then a DVI to HDMI adapter at the monitor. When I plug in the computer, I get "check signal cable"; however, plugging in other computers to the monitor works fine, including another mac. Does anyone have a solution to this?

THanks!

OS X Mavericks (10.9)
