Why is iTunes putting same artist multiple times?

Thanks for the detailed suggestions @welshcatholic. Much appreciated!
I just followed what you suggested and copied the tracks for all three albums onto the desktop, deleted them from iTunes and then re-added them to the library.
And they all magically now appear in the same single Artist entry in the left-hand section! Amazing! Not sure what difference it makes removing the same tracks and re-opening them, but for now am just happy that it worked 🙂...
And BTW I know that additional spaces would cause a problem, but surely that wouldn't be the case with my example since I have selected ALL the tracks and entered the same data for all of them at the same time. Useful to mention it though of course.
Thanks again!
Note to Apple support team - can you explain why this is happening please?
cheers
Lawrence
I hear you 🙂 But it's iTunes ... Hopefully the updates in the net one will fix the issue... if not, it's the hard way 😟
Glad it helped you 🙂
Yes, you would think that they wouldn't have problems of such a core nature in version 12.X.X.X.X of a product?!?!
Thanks again 😀
Rather than keeping back one control track, which you might then have to fix later, try adding a trailing X (or ! ) to what should be the correct value, then remove it. The fact that you're making a change should make sure that all values merge together.

You just need to sort out your album art now.. 😉
Glad that helped you. 🙂 It didn't work in my case...
Adding a trailing X didn't help me either, and I tried it multiple times with all the fields that I could. The trailing X was added, then removed and *still* the tracks stayed separate!!
I got most of my album art down from the iTunes store, but there are several that aren't there. Do you have any recommendations as to how I could get the last few albums' album art?
Thanks all for your comments and suggestions on this thread. Not sure where Apple is in all of this... very disappointed that they have declined to comment on this thread AT ALL yet. Very disappointed!!
Apple support team WHERE ARE YOU?
Make sure you select Album art and try a different country too.

and also
what works for me:
1. select all affected tracks and give them new artist and album artist names (same, random gibberish. eg "abc")
2. now they will all be under the same group again. select them all again and rename back to original artist.
Thank you so much! NOTHING was working for me, and this did.
If anyone is struggling with the same issue and nothing is working, try this! Save the unruly songs to your desktop, delete them from iTunes completely, then re-add them to iTunes.
I've tried all of these and nothing seems to work. It's so annoying. Just when I thought I had my iTunes library "fixed" another bug comes along.
I just fixed my issue!!! FINALY! Here is what worked for me:
1) I created a new playlist for the artist and added all of the artist's songs to the new playlist.
2) Once the songs were in the new playlist, I changed the artist name for ALL songs to "xx" and in essence "deleted" of the artist's name in iTunes.
3) I confirmed the artist no longer existed under the Artist tab on the left side of iTunes.
4) I selected all of the songs in the new playlist and changed the artist name back to what it was originally for all songs.
Now the songs are all under one artist entry versus 3-4 separate artist entries.
