Viewing pane below inbox is gone.

In mail, I can't see the viewing pane below the list of messages in the inbox. The only way I can view a message is by double clicking. If I try to pull up the horizontal line with the up arrow at the bottom of the inbox, nothing happens. Any ideas?

Thank you for trying to help me. I do have ElCapitan (10.11.2). When I look in Library under the HD, I do not find /Containers. Alphabetically, it goes from "Compositions" to "Contextual Menu Items".

It is not as you have written. The complete path is ~/Library/Containers

From Finder>Go>Go to Folder copy and paste:

~/Library/Containers

and try again as suggested above by Duane

In January of this year, you were able to help me restore the viewing pane, and I am really hoping you can help again.

It has happened again, but in trying to follow the previous solution: ...

Quit Mail

From Finder>Go>Go to Folder. Copy and paste:

~/Library/Containers

Move ~Library/Containers/com.apple.mail to the desktop

Restart Mail

If Mail is working properly, delete the com.apple.mail that you had previously moved to the desktop.

...I can not find ~Library/Containers/com.apple.mail in the Containers folder. Is it someplace in one of those folders, do you think? Or, do I need to do a different solution this time?

Thank you, Duane. I do have the viewing pane back.

Now, though, the mailbox looks completely different. I do have the pane on the left that list my two different email accounts, but all the mailboxes that I have set up are gone. Is there a way to restore those?

Also - the com.apple.mail that I moved to the desktop --- Do I leave it there or trash it? Will another be created in the Containers folder?

How can I prevent this from happening again (Other that the resizing that caused it in the first place?)

They are probably still there. If you slide your cursor to the right of the account name you will see a '+' sign appear and the text 'Show'. Click on 'Show' and your mailboxes will appear.

You can trash it. Another one will be created.

Don't close the preview pane.
