iphone facebook messenger using mobile data

Hi,

My iphone 6 (with IOS 9.2, i think) is using a lot of mobile with video calling on facebook messenger while connected Wifi. I have Wifi assist turned off. I have MyDataManager installed and it shows me that in a half hour period this morning I used 1.5GB of Wifi and 0.5GB of Mobile data. My mobile provide agrees that I used a lot of mobile data today. That's the only time today that I've done anything data intensive.

I've seen this happen a number of times over the past couple of months where I was sure I was on wifi, but had lots of mobile data used.

Had a search of the forum and can''t find any other references to FB Messenger doing this.

Anyone else experienced this? Any solutions?

Same problem here too. Again fast strong wifi yet FB Messenger video chat uses mobile data. It's cost me data many times. I am wondering if there is any relation to having chat turned off in the main FB app. Anyhow it shouldn't happen regardless.

These posts date back 11 months. Surely if it was a fault for all it would have been fixed a long time back. Something strange going on there.

I contacted me service provider o2 in the UK and they passed me on to an Apple senior technician.

He remotely connected to my phone and watched as we made test calls in Facebook Messenger while connected to WiFi. We tried all the usual fixes with no success. He took a diagnostic report off my phone and passed it to somebody further up the ladder and said he would get back to me.

4 days later I have received an email back from him. He says i need to contact the app developer ( Facebook ) and let them try to fix the problem then report back to the technician at Apple.

This is becoming a real pain as i have to turn off mobile data every time i return home.

Turn off cellular data for Messenger.
