Did Pages 5.6 Drop Appleworks Compatibility?

I just upgraded to El Capitan and also downloaded new versions of iWork software. I noticed that the old versions were left untouched on the hard drive. Good thing, because I have now noticed that the new version will not open an old Appleworks document. In fact, it seems that it will not open nor save even a text document?? Am I missing something?

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.2), , Apple since 1979!

I, too, started with something I recall as Home Accountant but, it was for the Apple.

Yes: Home Accountant was the program I started with in 1979 for my original Apple ][+. Being so slow, I eventually researched DOS enhancers and discovered that Home Accountant could be substantially faster using Diversi-DOS; before moving over to Time Is Money on the Apple ][ platform.

When I left Classic behind in 2008, I went to Quicken 2007 which I would have continued to use except that I was advised by both Quicken and my credit card company that they were discontinuing to support transaction downloads for Quicken 2007. So, I decided to upgrade to Quicken 2015 and I dislike it even more than Q2007.

Unfortunately, I think you were given bad advice!

If you use auto-download to obtain your Quicken transactions, maybe this advice is true. But in a world where nothing is safe online, the last thing I am going to do is give Intuit all of my financial log-ins and passwords! I use manual QIF downloading once a month from each of my financial institutions and easily IMPORT them into the appropriate Quicken account. I get ALL of my transactions into Quicken and I sleep well at night!

It's kind of too late! I have reestablished recurring transactions, reconciled all accounts, and, most important, converted my wife to Q2015! I'm stuck!

Maybe not! Depending upon how current your last transactions were in Quicken 2007, compared the amount of time it would take to then update these transactions to today and reconcile. But from your tone, it looks like too much work for you! 😟

I started with On Balance on my Apple IIgs & moved to Quicken ?95 or so when I got my first Mac. When support for Quicken (I used 2005) dropped in Lion I tried several different apps. I liked MoneyDance & SEE Finance the best but they still weren't as intuitive to me as Quicken. When Quicken 2007 for Lion came out I jumped on it & have been using it ever since. I did try Quicken Essentials. Their idea of "essentials" certainly wasn't mine! I did get Quicken 2015 but have only looked at it, it does seem better than QE but not by much.

In 1993 I created an MS Excel file that needed to be modified and re-saved weekly. It would be the basis of a new file each year for such weekly results.

In 2011 I continued to use this file in MS Office (Excel) 2004, when my iMac G5 died for the last time and I replaced it with the 2011 Mac Mini.

The 2011 Mac Mini came with Lion, which no longer supported Rosetta and hence Office 2004 would not function.

I upgraded to Office 2011 and the opening of this file was corrupted by Excel 2011, rendering it useless for my purposes. I had to find ways to continue to run Excel 2004 so that I could I could continue to use this file on a weekly basis.

Finally, years later, one of my associates rebuilt the file from scratch in Excel 2011, so that I did not have to continue to use Excel 2004.

It is a well learned lesson: keep a copy of important data out of proprietary format, so that it will be "future-proof" especially when the "MS-Lovers" insist it must be something YOU are doing wrong! 😁
