Using gross instead of net calories

I've been using smartphone health apps for longer than the Apple Watch has been available. My preferred application, which I used on an Android phone, was Endomondo and the calories burned reported by it agreed with just about everything I know about exercise, except that now I find out I've been using "gross" instead of "net" calories.


Is there anyway to get the Workout and Activity apps to use "gross" calories, or do I need to reduce my "Exercise" calorie target by whatever the "resting" calories are going to be during my workout, however long it might just so happen to take? I have several years worth of history and don't want to start all over again.

Oh, yes - calories burned while walking. That's the bane of my existence.


When I first started using the Watch, I was seeing around 100 calories per mile walked. As the Watch became "calibrated" (ahem) that went down to an "active calories" value of 65 to 68 calories per mile. I decided to conduct some "science experiments" and that resulted in massive blisters on my feet because there was just NO WAY to get the Watch to report enough calories that I could meet my "Move" goal, even though multiple other devices and applications all said I blew right though it -- and that was after netting out the 1,700 "resting energy" calories per day I burned during the time I was out ruining my feet. Apple's continued silence speaks volumes.

Apple will not "speak" until you call them or make a Genius Bar appointment. Are you having difficulty understanding that?


I agreed with you that you are having a problem. So go take care of your problem. But mine Watch is not having this issue, nor the vast majority of users, so why would Apple institute a global change to fix something that is not broken?

Because it really isn't just me. If you go through the forum there are a lot of people reporting the same or similar issues. There are people reporting problems with the heart rate, accuracy of the various calorie measurements, "Stand" hours, and so on. I woke up about 90 minutes ago and spent 10 minutes cleaning up the kitchen before the top of the hour and once again - no credit for standing up and moving around for TEN minutes.


If all of us just ran off to the Genuis Bar, how would any of us know that we're not alone in having all sorts of problems with these things? Watchgate seems to be a real problem - whether it's been tattoo-gate, wrist-gate or just plain watch-gate, these things got issues, just like many other new consumer electronics problems.

It's the same problem - "net" calories that don't agree with other sources or with mathematical models. Do we all have the same hardware problem? Because if we all have the same hardware problem, Apple has a bigger problem on their hands than if some programmer (and I'm a programmer) made a coding mistake.


So, thank you very much for your suggestion. I'm not just going to run off to the Genius Bar until I have a better idea of the scope of the problem so Genius Bar Dude doesn't tell me I'm imagining things or I need to turn my watch into a tourniquet or "no one else has reported that to us."

I had to actually clean my own house last week since my cleaning person was sick. Even had to use the vacuum cleaner. It picked it up on my watch as exercise time. I have no problem with stand time. My Move calories are accurate. So if there is a software issue why would mine be right and yours wrong? If they "fix" it would yours be right then and mine wrong?


The example you gave was pre-Watch 2.1.


Your reasoning for not having it looked at is illogical. I'm through wasting time with you as you appear to be a troll.

YES! I WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE IT LOOKED AT!


And I'm still having the same problem with major discrepancies between what the Watch reports and what every other application or fitness device I've ever used reports. And my watch is now running WatchOS 2.1. So ... the problem myself and many others are having didn't get fixed with the upgrade to 2.1.

I really need to stop responding to y'all so I can get the last of my workouts in for the day, then haul my sweaty body over to the Genius Bar.


When a problem like this makes it into the tech press, it's not just me and a few close friends and total strangers. But again, Apple's silence is deafening.


I greatly appreciate your enthusiasm and willingness to help, as well as how helpful you've been in general. That said, I'm not the sort of person who runs off to the Genius Bar (or any other support location) every time I have an issue. I've provided you with some little experiments you are more than free to conduct yourself. If the problem is just with my watch, you'll have different outcomes, and that would also be data. Indeed, a single broken accelerometer in my watch may well explain much of what I've seen.


On that note - off to become sweaty!

No I'm using Polar Beat with my Polar H7 heart rate monitor and ignoring the Watch. Which, other than being worthless as a fitness watch is pretty sweet. My phone was in the house the other day and I took a phone call on my watch. I also use it for paying for Starbucks without digging my phone or wallet out of my purse. Much love in every single regard except as a fitness watch.


The "workout app" still reports "active calories" about 30 or 40 percent lower than every other device -- plus or minus variations between devices that otherwise agreed very closely.

When I wrote my original post I was trying to get a handle on my exercise routine. I hate to say "now that I know how it works, I don't care" but it isn't a pressing problem any more.


One other thing I've learned is that apparently all of the active calorie measurements are based on heart rate, time, weight, etc. There were times when I'd head out and walk a mile or two and because the first 5 or 10 minutes are needed to reach a stable heart rate, the calories would be undercounted. Since then I make sure I leave the workout "running" while I cool-down. That's reduced the error by a fair bit. With Endomondo if I stop moving, the calories stop going up. That's not the case with the Watch, because it's busily measuring my heart rate.
