iTunes Database Corruption Issues
I have a recurring issue in which my iTunes database libraries "apparently" get corrupted - and result in iTunes trying to re-build the music library. During the re-build process, iTunes places these libraries in the Recycle Bin, and starts to build new ones. When this first happened, I stopped the re-build after a few minutes, so I could investigate the situation. I discovered that the "iTunes Library.itl" file and one other file (I believe it was either the "iTunes Library Genius.itdb" or the "iTunes LibraryExtras.itdb" suddenly appeared in the Recycle Bin. I checked file sizes of these against the current files in the active iTunes folder - and understandably, the files in the active folder were newer and much smaller in size. I maintain system images, so I replaced the files in the iTunes folder with week-old backups, and iTunes launched just fine. After adding a few new music folders to iTunes, I was back where I started.
When this first happened, I was running Windows 7 Pro. It happened a couple times over a two month period. In December 2015, I upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. The problem continues. I am always careful to close programs prior to a restart, so iTunes is always shutdown in an orderly way.
Yesterday, I tried rebuilding my library from scratch. I backed-up the entire iTunes folder, and emptied the contents of the active iTunes folder. I then launched iTunes and let it build the library. It took a few hours to complete. Unfortunately, it only found ~ 54,000 of the ~ 74,000 mp3 files in my music folder. I deleted the active iTunes folder and replaced it with the backup. Everything is fine - for the time-being. Since this weird "lost database" issue is sure to re-occur, I would like to know what tools may be available to check database validity, etc. in the meantime.
History: I had been using Windows Media Player for over ten years. As my music library continued to grow, I found that WMP was no longer reliable. I tried a few other products (Media Monkey, WinAmp, etc.) but they all had difficulty building a proper library (e.g. WMP placed over 12,000 songs into "Unknown Artist", and the other players weren't much better). I then decided to try iTunes. It built my music library perfectly (with perhaps a dozen albums with missing artwork - which was simple to fix). The important thing, was that it properly categorized all my music. I have been using iTunes for almost a year now. I love the product - and I love how I can tailor views and playlists to my liking. However, this database issue is really bothering me. I feel the product is unstable/undependable. If not for backups, I'd be in a big mess.
My configuration: My music folder resides on a non-system volume. The music folder is 669 GB in size; and contains 1678 artist folders (6216 albums; 74,414 songs). ALL the mp3 files have been tagged (by me) to include embedded album art. My PC is an Intel i7 with 16 GB RAM. The system drive is an SSD. The media drives are a combination of WD and Seagate 3TB drives (four total). The iTunes folder resides in its default location: C:\Users\username\Music.
Any ideas? Thanks!
