Hi. I went to the the answer below the question and turingtest2 posted to repair the apple update software and then reinstall the iTunes.

  1. First completely remove iTunes. Use Windows Apps and Features in settings - Scroll to itunes, click on it and then click Uninstall. Reboot your pc. I do this to insure all files are gone and reset memory etc.
  2. Go back to Apps and Features in Settings and Scroll down to Apple Update Software. click on it and Click "Modify" then Repair. It will repair and fix the Update software
  3. Download the latest iTunes update... 12.6... and go to File Explorer, folder Downloads. Find the iTunes64 setup file and right click it to install as Admin.
  4. In my case it worked. Good Luck and let me know if the instructions helped Cheers

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator. It may also help to pre-install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

I had this problem too when trying to install a newer version of iTunes on my windows PC. After searching online and finding it required an uninstall of the apple programs (i.e. apps) on my windows PC, I began doing so. When I got to the one called " Apple Software Update", I got the same message while trying to uninstalling this program under my windows 10 "Settings" page. I restarted my windows PC then went into the windows settings page again, selected the "Apple Software Update" program, then selected "modify" then "repair". I then was able to uninstall the "Apple Software Update" program. I then tried again to load the new version of iTunes and it worked... Your problem may be with one of the other Apple Programs in the windows PC settings, but you can try the "repair" process on them too

which may solve your problem. User uploaded file

Hope this helps.

I have tried the windows trouble shooter, deleting whatever associated files I can find and still the same message. I did just recently do a factory restore so I dont know if that has anything to do with it. any help would be great.

It did not work for me.
I have tried the instructions and de-installed all SW, in the mean-time also cleaned the registry, extracted the package which seems to make the problem (AppleSoftwareUpdate) and tried to install it separately - No Success.

The installation proceeds until a certain point, reports an error without any detals and back-out the installation. This happend with 12.6.1 as well as with the just discovered 12.6.2.

Below the visible windows (just having AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi extracted an run)

Do you have any other hint please.

I was running Windows 10 Pro Creator Update (10.0.15063) And resolved this issue using the steps outlined in my post right above yours and pieces of the 1st post in this thread, see copy/paste of those sections. The second bullet below is needed to successfully remove all pieces of iTunes. Again, note my steps directly above as I had to run repairs on a couple of MSI components and install some individual components to isolate the failing MSI component.

Typically that roll back during the install behaviour is caused by a failure to uninstall the existing copy of Apple Software Update in preparation for the new installation. Try repairing Apple Software Update from the Programs and Features control panel, then uninstall it before trying to reinstall iTunes. If it won't repair, or is no longer installed, try the MS install & uninstall utility mentioned in note 1 of the following guide. If it still won't uninstall you can remove all Apple components that will uninstall then use the steps in Install missing components to install everything apart from Apple Software Update.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator. It may also help to temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus.

Okay I reinstalled it after repairing the file in the programs and features section and it seemed to allow me to reinstall it okay again. HOWEVER, there are many times where when I do things like 1. Drag and drop music files, 2. Drag and drop cover art to songs on my itunes then click Ok, or 3. When the darn thing is syncing and "waiting for iphone to update" during the syncing process, it stays like that forever. I've tried everything and that's partly why I deleted and reinstalled the whole thing. I even restarted my computer and my iphone and everything. Still it does that a lot. What makes the syncing process freeze so much like that? Please help.

I'm proposing a short experiment in which you temporarily disable the anti-virus software (there is usually an option in the software's settings panel) to see if iTunes is better behaved when it is inactive. You would then enable the AV again. If there is no change in iTunes behaviour we can rule out the AV, but if it helps then it may be possible to change settings in the AV such that it causes less of a problem. If, on the other hand, you're not experiencing adverse symptoms now then perhaps the recent rebuild has helped after all.
