Hi. I went to the the answer below the question and turingtest2 posted to repair the apple update software and then reinstall the iTunes.

  1. First completely remove iTunes. Use Windows Apps and Features in settings - Scroll to itunes, click on it and then click Uninstall. Reboot your pc. I do this to insure all files are gone and reset memory etc.
  2. Go back to Apps and Features in Settings and Scroll down to Apple Update Software. click on it and Click "Modify" then Repair. It will repair and fix the Update software
  3. Download the latest iTunes update... 12.6... and go to File Explorer, folder Downloads. Find the iTunes64 setup file and right click it to install as Admin.
  4. In my case it worked. Good Luck and let me know if the instructions helped Cheers

I have this same problem but with the Windows 10 Pro Creator Update (10.0.15063).

I followed all of the steps to remove all iTunes pieces, files etc and then tried to install the new iTunes X64 install and got this error message. Any hints on how to fix, I now have no access to iTunes on my pc for backups, syncing etc. I backup to the cloud, but regularly backup to my PC using iTunes for recovery purposes.

Thanks

FYi...I resolved this issue by doing the following, partly from the troubleshooting page:

Extract msi components for new iTunes using 7Zzip

Installed alphabetically as instructed - this highlighted that the issue appeared to be with Apple Software Update and Apple Application Support

Using the individual components I REPAIRED the Apple Software Update and Apple Application Support

After repair, I tried to reinstall the iTunes kit again, no joy

Repeated detailed removal of all iTunes pieces per troubleshooting page, reboot, remove files

Reinstalled the iTunex64setup and voila everything appears to be there and working.

Try the Microsoft Fix-It tool mentioned in the notes to the second box. If you cannot repair ASU nor uninstall it in the usual way then you may need to delete the installation folders manually and attempt to reinstall after rebooting. See the section install missing components. If needs be you can install everything apart from ASU if it continues to be a problem.

I have the exact same thing happening to me. only I had iTunes and when I tried to import some of my pcs music, pictures or videos it would come up with the same error so I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall it but then it keeps coming up with the same error message "there is a problem with your windows pc installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run". I cant repair it because I don't have it installed so I have no idea what to do can anyone help?

thanks Matt

Try repairing Apple Software Update from the Programs and Features control panel, then reinstall iTunes.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
