HELP ASAP!! Mac email address apple id to iphone??

Hi,

I have a mac and an apple id on it which is my email address since I do not have a phone. I am getting a used I phone 5 but my questions are- can I receive / send calls, messages and emails (on the apple apps provided in the phone) if I sign into my email address apple ID onto the phone. Will messages and mail and other apps work and not just the calling app, and do I have to get a new SIM card and change my apple ID email address into a phone number. Please reply asap!
