A simpler way to enable authentication is to use the BMW connected drive website...sign in (or register) and go to Settings, Setup, Add Email Account. After putting in your Apple email, on the next line (UserName) delete the Apple suffix @icloud.com (or me.com, etc)....and then proceed to log in in your automobile at the usual Email authentication menu..... No need to mess with secondary security pass codes for non-apple devices.

Thanks for your help.

PS, I got this help from BMW technical support....

Thanks so much for your post - I was getting nowhere. The vital bit I was missing was entering the UserName without the "@icloud.com"

Also, for those (like me) who have set up Apple two-stage verification, in the password field you will need to enter the App-specific password generated exactly as shown when you create it on your Apple account - including the hyphens.

and finally:

Once you have set up a mailbox using the ConnectedDrive portal. You can see this from the drop down menu in Remote Cockpit/Control (don't worry if the password is not visible (password*) the mailbox is set up OK. See thread as if you have two-step verification it's an App specific password that is needed to set up the mailbox.

In the car, when you access the E-mail (via the Communication section in iDrive), the first time you use it it will ask for a Username and Password (and if you want it to auto-activate). These details are your ConnectDrive Login information, not your iCloud details! This confused me for some time. I have contacted BMW so hopefully any new documentation will give more precise instructions.
