I have an iPhone 5 and when I tried to reset the phone I needed to put in a passcode but this is not the passcode I set to unlock it and I have no idea what code it would be. Can anyone help?

Maybe you mean the restrictions passcode?
If you lose or forget your Restrictions passcode, you'll need to erase your device and then set it up as a new device to remove the Restrictions passcode. Restoring the device using a backup won't remove the passcode.
