Safari address bar does not work

It's happening to me too! I can't type any text. I noticed that when i try to type it doesn't even show the bookmarks so I disabled the search and the bookmarks suggestion then relaunched Safari and now it's working...or at least I can type.

Thanks. I read that you need to clear caches. Apparently this is easy on iPad or iPhone you just turn Airplane mode on and off. For the mac you go in Safari Preferences > Advanced > Show Develop menu . Then Empty Caches in the Develop menu. I then turned the preference Search > Include Safari suggestions back on and quit Safari and restarted. Seems to be all good now.

Same here. Doesn't even show a cursor, only focus rect around the text field. When I enter text it is not shown until I press enter but nothing else happens. So Safari 9.0.3 is broken and useless. Disabling search and suggestions fixes the issue.

BTW: Had the same issue with mobile Safari on my iPhone some time ago.

Apple: Please don't let something that may not be available (e.g. server responsible for search/suggestions) render the whole product useless. Who programmed this?

Unchecking only "Include Safari Suggestions" solves the issue. First I thought it is maybe Google's fault but now it's clear it's Apple's.

Had exactly the same problem. Went to System Preferences, turned off Safari. Then launched it.
It worked, so I turned Safari back on in iCloud Settings and confirmed the merge.

After restarting Safari everything worked as normal and all my bookmarks, search capabilities and login into was still there.

Hello. It's happening to me too, unfortunately.

This morning, after enabling FileVault on my MBA 11" 2015 for security reasons, it started doing that (I'm attaching a screenshot).

I tried to reset history, disable every extension, etc., but nothing changes. The bug shows up even when using Guest user, so that's a system-wide issue. I don't know if it's correlated to FileVault, but I have updated some days ago to 10.11.3 and this bug showed up just this morning.

I found that a temporary fix is to disable Safari's smart search in the settings, but that's a non-solution, because that functionality is pretty useful.

I only disable the suggestion in Safari-Pref-Search.

Same problem with Safari and El Capitan (latest version). Unchecking the boxes under search preferences helped.

Same problem here. Helps with the deselection of the Safari Suggestions.

I re-enabled the Safari suggestions and it seems to work now.🙂

Same problem here on two differents Macs at workplace (most recent MacPro running El capitan & 2012 iMac running Yosemite 10.10.5 and safari 9.0.3)

It seems to be affecting different OS and Safari builds so i think it may be a server-side issue, not a user side one.

Let me add another data point. Exactly the same problem as everyone else. Thanks for the suggestion of unchecking "Include Safari Suggestions" that did the trick.

Very strange indeed! I've just realised that even Safari on iPad air 2 is not working, whenever I try to type in the address bar Safari crashes. I think It's probably not working for the same reason because I disabled the suggestions and now it works.
