Safari search bar is not working. (Mac)

The search bar of Safari on my MacBook Pro is not working. When typing into the search bar, nothing shows up until I press enter, after which my search query appears twice in the address bar, once on the left and once in the middle. Quite often, the page fails to load, and when I am on a page, the website url shows twice, overlapping.
