URLs not working in Safari or Mail after iOS 9.2.1

After updating my iPad Air 2 iOS 9.2.1, I experienced Safari crashing when trying to open a new tab. I solved this problem by disabling Search Engine Suggestions and Safari Suggestions in Settings, as recommended. However now, if I've done a search, I cannot open any of the links in that search. If I type a specific URL in the Search Box, then I can open the page, but am unable to sign in, use any links from that page, etc. Also, I find that I am unable to open any URL links that I receive in Mail and tapping on a link then locks up Mail... I have done a full sync to my iMac, which can sometimes rectify a problem, but it hasn't helped in this instance.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi folks,

tried the reboot with power and home button at least 10 times, removed all running apps before und deleted cache, no success.

When I resume all the posts, it seems that the bug will be backed up on iCloud and on iTunes. So you may try an old backup from one of the sources and get a (temporar) fix, but you will probably loose some or a even a lot of data. That is no way for me because so much content on my iPad changes every day, and the iCloud Backup runs every night.

I canceled my date at the Apple store today, because of the information that a new device will not solve the problem when the backup is restored.

In fact the easiest solution would be an IOS update to a new version.

One should never give up the hope....

Never had problems with IOS 6.xx and 7.xx imho many problems started with 8 and have not been solved in 9, e.g. this asking for WIFI password all the time ( which can be solved by one or two reeboots and/or a router reset), annoying in any case.

PS: Is there Apple staff who reads those threads?

I had updated my iPad Air 2 and iPhone 5s to 9.2.1 a couple of days before going on a vacation. I didn't notice any issues with Safari before leaving. On vacation, the iPad started acting up like everyone else has been writing in this thread. I had to resort to my iPhone to surf the web. Not the best user experience!

After my return, I tried clearing the cache, and reinstalling iOS (including the backup). Unfortunately, the issues are still there. But, I have found out that if I open a website and click on links that remain in that same site then everything seems to work. Example: Open Facebook in Safari and click on links to other users - these do work. But clicking on a link to content outside of Facebook, then nothing happens. Holding a finger on any link, be it inside of that site or outside, for too long (context menu activation) will freeze Safari.

Does that sound familiar to you?

It seems that the only remedy for this issue is to do a full restore without restoring from a backup. It worked for me. Lots of work, though, but many things are already on iCloud and other cloud services. I won't say it is fixed because we don't know what the ultimate cause of this issue is. It may therefore return.

As a restore is a at least temporary solution to this issue to which we don't know the cause, I doubt that Apple will provide a fix.

Same problem.

My temp solution, mentioned above w more detail, of substituting Mail by CloudMagic and Safari by Chrome works great >80% of the time. I complement w Mercury and , of course, Mail & Safari.

This has taken the pressure off me and I'm relaxed using my iPad again!

As you said, it's a big pain attempting to recover from all the different backups, iCloud, Dropbox, etc etc and at the end there are no guarantees that solution will hold longer term.

Hi everybody.

I first contributed to this thread in early February and by this morning I still had the same problem on my iPad Air 2, as does my wife on hers. So today I thought - what the .... I will erase all content and settings and start again. Back to square one. No restore from back up. No restore from iTunes. Simply set up as a new iPad. Took hours. Still not quite finished.

Settings says I have the latest version of 9.2.1 on the newly set up Air 2. Guess what - I STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH SAFARI AND LINKS, INCLUDING MAIL HYPERTEXT!!

This week I swapped my old iPhone 4s for an iPhone 6. Set it up with a lot of the stuff I have on my iPad. Safari works fine on the iPhone 6! The 6 has 9.2.1.

Strangely when I sync the 6 with iTunes I am told a new version of 9.2.1 is available. I am not going to update the 6!!

For one moment this evening I thought I had found the problem. On the iPhone 6 the version of 9.2.1 is (13D15). On the Air 2 it is (13D20). But (13D20) was released after I first had problems with the Air 2.

When will this end?!
