after I have been entering info into a column, it starts to slow down so much it literally takes minutes to finally move on to the next box, now it seems to have this problem all the time-

Have you tried closing Numbers and restarting your Mac?
Do you have special formulas in your document?

Try restarting Numbers. After that, try restarting your computer.
After restarting the computer try to use the Numbers document with only Numbers running. Do you have many other applications running?
Can you post a screenshot of the Memory segment of "Activity Monitor"?
Open the folder "/Applications/Utilities" Activity Monitor is located here. If there is high memory pressure then you may not have enough memory.
Additional questions:
How big is your table (number of rows and number of columns)?
Is there more than one (large) table?
Does it have Footer rows? More than one header row?More than one header column?
