If using Raise to Speak, how listen to your audio text message before sending?

When I'm using Raise to Speak in the Messages app, after I've recorded an audio message of greater than 15 seconds in length, how can I then listen to it to make sure I want to send it? There's no Play icon. I know that if the message is less than 15 seconds it'll get sent automatically, but if it's longer the options are only delete or send.

This audio message feature seems inconsistent because if you record a longer message using the other technique -- holding down the microphone icon while you speak -- then when you're done you have a Play button to listen before you send.

Ah, right. For me, I can initiate a message either by holding the microphone icon or by using raise to speak.

When you're in the Messages app and the text field is indicating 'iMessage', and you raise your phone to your ear, a tone doesn't sound?

I did find this discussion with someone else who previously could use raise to talk but after upgrading to 8.4 no longer could: Unable to use raise to talk feature

Anyway, thanks for helping clarify my original issue!

The feature is called "Raise to Listen". Settings>Messages>Audio>Raise to Listen. I was confused by your post because I knew Raise to Speak (a Siri feature) had been removed with, I think iOS 9 (but possibly earlier). Therefore, I was trying to provide some clarification to anyone else who might be reading it.

Raise to Speak allowed you to raise the phone and star talking to Siri. Raise to listen, allows you to listen to and respond to audio messages in Messages. It also doesn't, as I understand it, allow you to start an audio message, only respond to one.

What Language & Region are you using in iOS? If it's not English, that might be contributing to the confusion.

Hmm... I have no problem initiating an audio message in the Messages app with this Raise to Talk feature (which has nothing to do with Siri) on my iPhone 5s with iOS 9. In the Messages app, when in a thread, I just raise my phone to my ear and a tone sounds, and I start recording. Then the other person uses Raise to Listen to listen to that audio message. It seems that when you use Raise to Listen, it's to listen to messages created through Raise to Talk, no?

I'm in the US, using English.

Right, I see what you're saying -- there's no separate setting for Raise to Talk. Maybe 'Raise to Listen' is just the general name for 'raise to listen and talk'. I'm in a thread in Messages and the last message from my friend is either a regular text message or an audio text message, I raise my phone to my ear and a tone sounds. Then I start speaking. So I can either be responding to an existing audio message or initiating an audio message.

I guess we could say that Raise to Listen allows you to raise to listen, and reply, and initiate! I just prefer to name the two features separately -- raise to listen, and raise to talk. Maybe Apple calls them all Raise to Listen, but that seems very confusing! But you definitely can initiate.

When you say you can respond to but not initiate an audio message with your own audio message, how else would that initial audio message be created except by using Raise to Talk? Somebody has to have been the initiator, and don't they use what I'm calling Raise to Talk for that?

The initial audio message is made by pressing and holding the microphone icon to the right of the text input box. I've just spent several minutes attempting to initiate an audio message without using that icon and I can't see any way to do it.

I realize that none of this answers your original question. As I don't generally use audio messages, I don't have a good answer. I just wanted to be sure that anyone reading the thread understood what you were talking about.
