Maybe I didn't paint a good picture for you in original post. My Dad gave me his old iPhone 4s when he got an iPhone 6s. I had him uncheck the find my phone feature and delete the device for the old 4s under his iCloud account, thus releasing his interest in the device. When I attempted an update/restore in iTunes on my MacBook Pro iTunes completed downloading the iPhone restore package and started the process. ITunes restarted the iPhone and the progress bar made it three quarters of the way through on the iPhone and then I got an error #29,can't complete restore. I updated ITunes on my MacBook 2009 "13" running El Capitan 64bit. I then did all the IOS updates on the computer, got a couple different usb chords I knew were good, changed usb ports, restarted a hundred times and proceeded to try it in iTunes with Windows 10 64bit another six ways to Sunday. The 4s goes straight to the connect iTunes logo w/usb when it starts up regardless if I hold both buttons and release the power button to put in DFU mode or if I just shut it off and let it start up normally. If that isn't enough I downloaded Tiny Umbrella, wouldn't recognize the device. tried to enter command prompt and run recboot.exe, bootrec.exe or bootcfg.exe with no success. Then I downloaded iphone 4,1 8.0 12A365 ,Restore.iphone but couldn't transfer iso into itunes or the device. Then downloaded RedSnow win 0.9.15b3.zip and ran utility in Win 10 64bit but wouldn't recognize the device. Then downloaded Cydia7.zip, Reiboot.exe and Demon403-x86 cause I tried to find a version that was 64bit and thought I did find one claiming to be 64bit savy however, wouldn't recognize the device in any one of those utilities. The thought has crossed my mind that the 64bit system could be the problem so........... I tried to do restore/update running 32bit Win 7 Ultimate with an itunes for windows download. None such luck my new friend sberman. The IPhone made it 3/4 of the way, the progress bar stopped and itunes produced another error 1079 I think, can't totally remember the code number. I didn't try any of those fancy utilities in 32bit Windows and haven't got the Iphone 4s out of recovery mode still.Hopefully I've painted a better picture for you now and still appreciate your assistance and any advice you may have. I do understand I can trade the 4s in on a 6s with $350 credit however, that would make the free 4s gift from Dad about a $300 dollar expenditure for me and the whole thing might lose its luster!

Going through this same issue as well. I feel none of the "solutions" are compatible with 64 bit Itunes. Guess Apple really knows how to put the last nail in the coffin for 4S. I should have kept itunes from being installed on my computer in the first place. It just corrupted my phone. I never used the application for anything. My phone was fine before I plugged it into my computer for charging. I wasn't trying to do an update or anything and it has been stuck on recovery mode for 2 days and have attempted every past workable solution that I could google. This frustrates me to no end because I know this is all planned by Apple to put the consumer at their mercy and buy more crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bye Bye Apple. Gave you a chance with the 4s. Switching to S A M S U N G!!!
