If I open a fresh project this problem does not occur. The problem however is with the template I am using, when i have a loop area selected it starts playback from just before the selected area.
Hi thanks for the info, I've just realised that this problem is occurring even without loop. The playhead jumps back one division (as in bar, beat, devision, tick) when pressing play.
Any ideas?

Right click on the play button up in the transport controls and select the behavior your prefer....
You can select more than one....
Logic x playback starts from just before the loop bracket
