How to download photos without adapter
on holiday, no adapter, need to transfer pics to iPad. Generation 4 PC in hotel has card reader n USB port

About the only option for you would be to load those photos onto the hotel's computer, then upload them to somewhere like Flickr or dropbox or other such service, then download them onto your iPad.
If you do that you may want to make sure you sign out of everything after you're done so some other guest doesn't access your files. Also, to use dropbox you'd need to install something on the hotel's computer which you may or may not be able to do.
