How do you change install locations on a Macbook?

I am getting a external SSD for my Macbook because it is low on storage space and I cannot delete apps because I use all of them. What I am wondering is, how do I change the location of where all my downloads go? Like if I download Firefox from the internet and I want to download it on my external SSD, how would I do that?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

How to control where it downloads in Firefox Preferences:

But applications themselves load into the boot volume instead of external drives because very few applications are self-contained in a folder ... most scatter themselves through many system folders.
