I have restricted the installation of apps on my son's iPhone. The few games I have allowed won't update automatically. I have to go into Restrictions and enable app install and then do the update.
Is there a way around this - I have auto update enabled, but the Restrictions seem to override.
Is this a bug?
When you disable "Installing Apps" in your restrictions, it disables the App Store completely.
Instead, leave "Installing Apps" enabled ... now, scroll down in your Restrictions menu until you see "Apps". From there, you can select "Don't Allow Apps". The App Store will remain active and either of you should be able to update the apps currently installed on the phone. As far as the App Store goes, your son will be able to browse apps, but he won't be able to download any.

Sorry, I spoke too soon. Apparently my approach doesn't work the way I expected. I don't think there's a way to block the installation of apps without blocking the ability to update them.
That's correct; you can't update apps if you have a restriction on installing apps. It makes sense in a way; some updates change the capabilities and features of the app.
Right - if you have restricted Installation of Apps, it will restrict any installation including the installation of updates.
