iPad as car headrest display unit for Kids

Hi All,

My queries/requirements are a bit different. Since this forum has lots of iPad enthusiasts, I am trying my luck to find the optimal solution to my needs.

requirements: Yesterday night I was looking for car headrest DVD player for my 2 yr old kid. I came across few player providing USB/Micro SD input and screen size of 10 inch. They come along with remote and IR headset. They cost usually under $200.

But later I thought whether the same requirements can be met using a tablet. I am ready to shed more money say around $300 for meeting such requirement via tablet. What a need is

  1. 10 inch tablet that plays movies from USB/micro SD card reader – Searched internet and found few tablets with USB. However, everyone of them has few limitation. Please let me know if we can use iPad or any other tablet to play movies from USB flash drive/SD card. It shall support different video formats playback.
  2. Car Headrest mount to hold tablet – Found many mounts available
  3. Tablet comes with remote to navigate across various apps/folder
  4. Support IR/Bluetooth headset

Thanks for your assistance.

Ok, this can be done sort of. First of all none of the iPads have a USB/SD card reader in them. There are apps that will play a wide variety of video format files. VLC player is one of them. You could purchase a wifi hard drive that will work an ipad to store the movies. And as for a remote. I'm not sure if that is possible. Your best bet with an iPad would be to load the movies onto the device and play it directly from the device. iPads are not designed to be used exactly in the manner you describe above.

I hope this helps.
