Images are mixed up in Mail on iPhone iOS

Hardware:
Device: iPhone 6/iPhone 6S
iOS: 9.x.x

Issue description:
We're sending a daily HTML newsletter to our users in which we have several images. We realised that sometimes the images were displayed in the wrong position in the Mail App (other email clients are working fine).

I open a newsletter and scroll through sometimes the images are mixed up. They are in the wrong position, or duplicated and has the wrong size (size from the original one). Copying the image URL from a wrong image in Mail and pasting it in Safari, displays the correct image.

User uploaded file

It seems the images are cached. Then I open Mail app they display the wrong image. It's really hard to reproduce this issue, they causes irregular times.

Temporary fix:
Closing the app, clearing the cache or restarting the phone fix the problem, but new emails might have the same problem again.

Questions:
Is there a way to fix this issue on our side?
Is this a (known?) issue in Mail.app?

Thanks for reading and helping!

This exact thing seems to happen to us, too. Images get randomly replaced by images from our other emails that the user has opened previously. When opening the actual URL, the right image is showing, so the bug is not on our end.

Edit: The images have different names (and obviously content), but the same dimensions. Most of the users reporting this have had iOS10.
