Hi;
My iMac 27" (mid 2011) has four USB ports, one of which appears to be dead. I have restarted and have zapped the PRAM to no avail. I an considering resetting the SMC but understand that this is not something to be done lightly.
Any other thoughts?

Resetting the SMC seems to have done the trick. Thanks for the confirmation, Old Toad.

OK I spoke too soon. Now a different port is dead. How irritating. Any other ideas?

Do another SMC reset and if you still have a malfunctioning USB port it's time to make an appointment at the nearest Apple Genius bar for a free diagnostic check.
Have you tried using a self powered USB hub with the working USB port?

I had been using a unpowered USB2 hub for years. When this issue presented, I got a powered USB3 hub hoping that would solve the issue not realizing that the problem was the port, not the hub.
I reset the SMC again and now a different port is dead and the previous dead port is now active. Hmmmm . . .

Sound like a trip to the Genius bar for a free diagnostic check is in order.
Apparently, the SMC reset is heat sensitive. I left the Mac unplugged for a couple of hours before trying it again. Hallelujah, it worked!
