iPhone 6 battery dies in cold weather

Battery dies on my iPhone 6 in cold weather. Phone is about 15 months old, and dies from good battery 50% to 30% down to nothing and auto switch off. ON normal weather the battery is still very good and doesn't show sign of weakening on any normal day. But if it is cold outside, phone will dye in minutes if used outdoors. I first noticed when we went skiing around -5C (20-25F) and it was really bad there. But now it started doing it when it's around +5C (41F) shutting the phone down from 30% battery. When I plug it in, it immediately turns the phone back on and shows 25 or 35% remaining....

Anyone? Design issue? Specific app to kill? Running iOS 9.3, but it was already doing it on iOS 9.2 .... Thanks

Its very true that the temperature operating range is 0 - 35 degrees C (for iPhones) and Apple is really taking advantage of this, I will explain why.

If you feel that your iPhone dies when you are in Cold areas, and then leave your mobile phone to Apple service center, they will test the battery in room temperature.

The problem is that in room temperature the battery will show "good" (around 80-90% capacity if you have used it for a while). They will return your phone and say that (in room temperature) the battery show good capacity.

The problem is that this old batteries (that you have used for a while) behaves very very different in Cold temperatures compared to a new battery.

A new battery have no problem operating in 0 degrees C and there will be no problem even in -5 to -10 degrees C.

In -10 degrees C a new iPhone battery will have around 75-80% capacity.

An old battery drops enormously in capacity below 0 degrees C.

So for us who live in Cold countries its a pain in the a... during Winter if you dont own a new mobile phone.

Maybe this is one of the reasons why Apple Always release new models Close to the Winter, then there will be no problem first Winter at least.

I've had iPhone since its original version. Right now I have iPhone 6 64gb and this is the first time I'm considering switching to android phone.

I can't be more then 5 min outside on 0 - +5 C without having it shut off and the battery can be at 50-60%. It's so frustrating

Has apple ever addressed or replayed t about this problem?

Two days ago my iPhone 6s 128GB iOS 10.2 died suddenly without warning while on a walk with temperatures at 33F. Attempting to restart showed the red battery warning with 1% charge remaining. I plugged in a portable battery charger and the iPhone immediately rebooted and showed 70% battery. I seriously doubt that the battery charged the phone to 70% in the time required to reboot.

After a few minutes of continued walking at 32F, I unplugged the battery and the iPhone 6s continued to operate for about 5 minutes when it suddenly crashed again with about 75% battery showing before the crash.

I have been experiencing battery problems since the installation of iOS 10.1. I did not notice any problems with previous versions of iOS.

I have an iPhone 6s plus and this winter every time I take it outside and the temperature is below 40 degrees F the phone dies almost immediately no matter how much battery it has left. I really wish apple could come up with a fix for this problem because if I would like to use my phone outside it doesnt work. Especially because I'm into photography and if I see something interesting in the outdoors my iPhone is no longer reliable enough to take a picture. I have never had this problem before with this phone last winter, but this November it began to shut down in the cold. Even with the other iPhones I have had in the past haven't done this. With winter lasting about 4 months where i live my iPhone is just about useless outside (which is where i spend most of my time). Please fix this problem apple!!

SAME ISSUE! Iphone 6s, phone in my coat pocket isn't enough to keep it from shutting off with over 50% battery left. I have to carry a work phone and my Samsung S7 is just fine, sitting right along side the iPhone.

I'm well aware that lithium ion batteries don't like the cold. But I also know that low quality cells behave much worse in the cold.

Same issue here.

iPhone 6s 64GB bought brand new from Apple store 6 months ago.

The phone would turn itself off in temperatures lower than 10 degrees Celsius even when the battery shows more than 70%. My wife has a 6s 32BG bought a few months earlier than mine but her phone works fine in cold temperatures. Bought a 5E for my daughter at the same time when my 6s was bought. Her phone works fine too in very cold weather. The 4s and 5s and the iPod also work fine in cold temperatures.

When I phone the downtown Vancouver store, the fellow answering the phone was extremely arrogant and nasty saying there's nothing wrong the phone. The problem was that I didn't treat the phone properly! That's it. I am not qualified to own an iPhone.

I will explain the difference between a new iPhone6 battery and an "old" one (many cycles).

In the picture below you see what happens to a new iPhone6 battery when the temperature go from +28 degrees C down to -12 degrees C, and then up to 28 again.

User uploaded file
As you can see, the battery capacity have a nice and controlled curve and this iPhone6 will not have any problems during cold weather. At -12 degrees C the battery capacity is down at 81% (which is very good).

Now, take a look at the next picture that show a used iPhone6 with a battery charge cycle of 291.

User uploaded file

At room temperature, the difference in battery capacity is not so big. This old battery have 85% capacity in room temperature, which is good.

The problem is when the temperature decreasing.

In colder temperature the iPhone6 battery have a very different curve than a new battery.

Even at 0 degrees C the capacity has decreased from 85% to around 40% (which is not ok).

I also made some tests on another iPhone6 with 453 charge cycles, and this one has a battery capacity of 5% at 1 degrees C.

But when Apple test your battery they do it in room temperature = the battery looks good.

Im pretty sure that Apple knows about this but it would be really expensive to admit it to the public.

Iphone 6 - battery condition under normal temp. good, that is 1500 of original 1810 mAh.

User uploaded file

I made some screens of my battery wear after I was able to swith the phone back (warming the phone in pocked after it died in 0C) and the soft showed this

User uploaded file

Notice the capacity droped to 700 mAh

After 8 min of playing with the phone (notice it shows 1%) I made another screen.

User uploaded file

Notice that in just 8 min the capacity almost doubled - yet the battery level remained 1%.

The I plugged it in - it instantly showed 48%.

Just saying that this can be somehow related to a soft bug, but yes obviously the capacity of the battery decreases significantly in low temperatures.

And yes Apple probably is very well aware of this problem but they calcuted the loss this would generate so they keep quiete.

Same deal. Have had 6s plus for 14 mos. Does not meet the serial number criteria for replacement.

So incredibly frustrating. I am an Obstetrician and if my phone fails my patients have no way to reach me.

Saw a "genius" yesterday who said it must be my "charging habits". However when he tried to pull up an analysis of said habits, it failed. Then he concluded there must actually be a battery issue and recommended i buy a new $80 dollar battery. Uhhh, no.

No recourse I guess except to finally go Android which my husband has been begging me to do for years.
