Trying to deauthorize PPC mini running iTunes 4

Hi, I have an old PPC mini that I want to give away. I'd like to deauthorize the machine first but I can't seem to connect to the iTunes Store. When I try going to https://appleid.apple.com.ca I get a message from Safari saying it can't establish a secure connection. I'm guessing the software is all too old to talk properly to a secure server anymore. I don't want to Deauthorize All. What are my options?

Macbook & mini, both Intel versions, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

Is your date & time correct?

Certificates rely on accurate date & time, enable automatic date & time in 'System Preferences > Date & time' if the clock battery is failing to keep it accurate.

I suspect it could also be other certificate issues, but it may be easier to try another Mac - do you have access to other hardware? I have a horrid feeling deauthorise all is the only option.

iTunes 10.6.3 on OS X 10.5.8 works with the store (from U.K.). I can authorise, browse, deauthorise in the store.

Have you tried another browser? Firefox may be worth a try - I think it has it's own 'certificate store', so it may work if the system store is broken.

Is the Mac working for other secure sites?

Can you login to https:// Gmail, Amazon or any other httpS site you have a login for? If your certificates are damaged, invalid etc you may be unable to create a secure connection for other sites.

/Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access has a system for updating the certs in the Preferences > Certificates tab, enable OCSP…

On 10.5.8 I have 'best attempt' for OCSP & CRL. With OCSP as the 'priority'. I don't recall changing these so think they may be the default settings.

I don't know how to trigger updates for this system, reboot & see if anything changes! I think it may be triggered by visiting secure sites or it may just be a background job.

What versions of OS & iTunes do you have installed? iTunes 4 seems old - the store was introduced in that version. Check software update again 🙂

Hi Drew,

I am able to access other https sites, though Safari complains that the certificates are bad. I'm using OS X 10.3.9 and Software Update tells me my software is up to date. I've tried using the Repair function in Keychain Access. It tells me there are no problems. Unfortunately this version of Keychain Access doesn't have an update function for certs. It doesn't even have a Preferences menu item. I'll do a little more digging and see if I can update the certs manually somehow.

Thanks for the help,

Mike

Overall what is your aim?

I know you want to deauthorise this in iTunes, but you could just erase the disk instead. A new owner could still play your files, however that would first need to access them e.g. they would probably need your Apple ID password unless you gave them the files.

Are you trying to make the Mac into a working state for the new owner? Frankly a reinstall would do that if you have the install disks.

I'm not sure how to update the certificates on 10.3, sorry.
