airport extreme extending

I bought an airport extreme to replace my old one and i still want to use it to extend my wifi but the old airport will only extend my wifi through wifi. when i plug in an ethernet cord to both airports, the older one won't extend anymore and it will have a lot of issues. Ive tried it with different ethernet cords and the same thing keeps happening. Any help?

There are several things that may be happening with your wireless network or parts thereof.

Since they're all invisible to visitors here, there are some support articles that may be helpful.

• Wi-Fi base stations: Extending the range of your wireless network by adding additional Wi-Fi base stations - Apple Suppo…

• How to extend New AirPort with Older AirPort Extreme: (this may repeat some of the above)

If you have a recent OS X system there is a built-in utility that can help diagnose issues:

• Use Wireless Diagnostics to help you resolve Wi-Fi issues on your Mac - Apple Support

An older ASC thread has some ideas:

Extending Time Capsule wireless network with an Airport Extreme

Perhaps one of the resident wi-fi experts (or those who have significantly more info than me)

will see your thread and offer advice, and if you supply more information on both hardware

and software involved, that helps. Some older AirPort base stations cannot be administered

by the newer OS X; or may require firmware or other updates to be seen, if supported at all.

The version of AirPort Utility has a bearing on being able to administer & setup these units.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
