safari server unexpectedly drops connection error

I am frequently getting this error with Safari, but not other browsers:

I've read that clearing your cookies & etc. should resolve this. For me, doing that has *not* resolved this. Any other ideas?

Hi. Thanks for your quick response again. Here are the results. (Background: these are personality tests that I manage/program. The tests used to run off the server I'm using now fine ~2 years ago. We upgraded to a different server (3rd party) service but we kept the smaller server (3rd party) service as a backup during those 2 years. Now we are migrating back to it for cost reasons. In testing out the tests on the smaller server, I started having this issue ~ 1st time ever. No other browser, no other website has had the issue.)

Step 1: Yes the issue persisted. Same issue, a bit less frequently than before. Was able to get through the test eventually by re-logging in.

Step 2: Yes the issue persisted. Different error message, see below. Couldn't get anywhere at all. Could not even begin the test.

Aftermath: restarted as usual (non-safe mode) and tried a third time. Was able to complete the test. The original issue did recur but only once (compared to 5 or 6 times initially, and 3 times during Step 1's trial.)

Any thoughts? Thanks again.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Please start up in Recovery mode. In the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.

Test. After testing, restart as usual and post the results.

Please restart your router, if you haven't done that since this started. Also see below.

From the menu bar, select

System Preferences... Network

If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the Proxies tab. If any proxy options are selected, make a note of them and then deselect them. You don’t need to change the bypass or FTP settings. Click OK and then Apply. Test. The result may be that you can't connect to any web server. Restore the previous settings if that happens.

Power un- and re-plugged for both the router and for the wireless device. There were no proxies enabled, so no action taken there.

Test again: yes the problem persists (it occurred 3 times while running through the test this time).

My most-important question is: is this issue local to me, or does it reside on the server itself? If the former, while I'd like to fix it, I can live with it for the short-term. But if it is going to affect my customers, that is not going to be acceptable. Thoughts?

I am having the same problem opening random sites. Once I receive the "Safari Can't Open the Page" error page, I refresh and the page comes back. The problem that I have with accepting your solution is that it does not occur on other browsers. It only happens on Safari. Safari maybe timing out? I'm no expert. This problem is annoying enough that I changed my default browser to Firefox. I hope there is a solution to this problem soon.
